Goldilocks and the Three Bears, by Gennady Spirin

Gennady Spirin has taken a favorite childhood tale and imbued it with charm, dressing his bears in Renaissance costumes and providing whimsical and charming furniture designed for their country dwelling. Each spread—painted in watercolor, pen, and ink—brings renewed life to this endearing children’s classic in a way that only a master illustrator can. No wonder Goldilocks want to sample the bears’ porridge, sit on their chairs, and rest on their beds!

From Publishers Weekly
In his adaptation of the Goldilocks story, Spirin's (The Lord Is My Shepherd) lush colored pencil and watercolor spreads are as elaborate as the text is simple. Against white backdrops, Goldilocks and the bears are drawn in great realistic detail, along with judicious use of ornate setting details and delicate page ornamentation. These bears have fierce claws and teeth, but their apparel is nothing short of royal, dotted with jewels and pearls, and trimmed with feathers and gold. The text, conversely, is completely free of metaphors or complex sentences, the story stripped to its tag-line essence: "Who's been sitting in my chair?" asks each bear parent as Little Bear laments, "My chair's broken!" The suspenseful scene as the bears find Goldilocks asleep in Little Bear's well-appointed bed is followed by an abrupt illustration in which Goldilocks runs away, looking more gleeful than terrified, as each of the bears says, "Bye," and the narrator informs the reader, "And that's the end of the story!" Goldilocks' face doesn't always transmit her emotions clearly, but overall this is an enchanting-visually, at least-version. Ages 3-7.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2—Spirin's version of this classic pairs a simple, straightforward retelling with lush Renaissance costumes and elegant page designs. The bears, rendered in watercolor and colored pencil, are solid, realistic creatures, revealing sharp teeth and claws. Papa and Mama Bear, generally appearing together in their fur-trimmed garments, dominate their vertical space—in contrast to their diminutive son. The setting is created with richly realized essentials: solid porridge bowls, carved chairs, ornate beds, a massive stucco and wood-trimmed dwelling. Expansive white space surrounds the characters on most spreads, with embellished lines creating decorative, horizontal borders on selected pages. The creatures seem to regard their intruder more as a curiosity than a criminal; as the golden-haired child runs away down the path, they simply wave and call out their farewells. A source note concludes the text. The Goldilocks shelf is crowded; readers can turn to James Marshall for humor, Jan Brett for details, Valeri Gorbachev for whimsy, and Jim Aylesworth for Victorian, to name but a few. This newcomer will be embraced for its visual clarity and sumptuous style at storytimes and bedtimes alike.—Wendy Lukehart, Washington DC Public Library

From Booklist
Retelling the familiar nursery tale, Spirin retains its brevity and much of its charm. The artwork dresses the characters in elaborate Renaissance costumes and occasionally places them before fully painted backdrops but usually shows them and a few props (bowls, chairs, beds) as cutouts against clean, white backgrounds. Since the style of Spirin’s watercolor and colored-pencil artwork is relatively sophisticated and richly detailed, this technique makes the pictures clearer and more accessible to young children. The bears have great physical presence, and unlike those in most dressed animal tales, here they seem quite wild—inhuman and untamed—for all their elegant trappings. Goldilocks is a pretty blond charmer with an occasional frozen, toothy smile reminiscent of a first-grader facing the lens on school picture day. An appended note provides a brief history of the story, noting changes in several versions from 1831 to 1904. Although many fine editions are available today, this nicely designed book would be a handsome addition to larger collections. Preschool-Grade 2. --Carolyn Phelan

Exquisite
By OutlawPoet
First, you should know that this is a very basic and traditional retelling of Goldilocks. If you are looking for something updated or humorous, you'll want to keep looking.

However, the story as it stands is still perfect, just the way it was when we grew up. But it's supplemented by some of the most exquisite illustrations I've seen lately in a children's book. The book is a work of art that simply begs to be kept on the nightstand, rather than shoved in a book case with the rest of your child's books.

I thought at first that my daughter might be too young to appreciate the beauty of the book, but she loves it. The illustrations are incredibly detailed and she loves picking out little things she didn't notice the first time we read the book.

This just might be one of those heirloom books that we'll pass on to the next generation as well.

Simply beautiful!

beautiful artwork
By Maggie
You'll want to slow down and study the illustrations. There are so many visual statements. My six year old and I laughed at the ridiculous. We oohed and aahed at the beautifully rendered characters and their surroundings. This was a fun picture book. .

Basic re-telling of the story with washed out but elaborate illustrations
By iiiireader
This version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears is a stripped down and basic re-telling of the story. There are no elaborations or new twists as far as the tale goes. The price point is kind of high and I am assuming that it is because of the illustrations. While many have liked those, I find them a bit washed out and kind of cut and paste photoshop feel to them. I would have liked to have seen some form of background to given a richer feel to the illustrations but instead they are placed on a white page in a cut out form. The colors could have been richer given that the illustrations put the story in the Renaissance. It is an okay book but one which could have been better given the price.

THE introduction to Astrobiology: A chapter by chapter review
By Steve Reina
Are we alone in the universe? This might well be the next BIG QUESTION science answers.

Though of course Cockell will not provide readers with the location and identity of our nearest extra terrestrial neighbors he does give readers an excellent introduction to what that life may be like and where it may be found.

PLEASE NOTE; As I give chapter descriptions I will also give some other suggested readings, some of which are made by Professor Cockell and some which I humbly submit for consideration. Unless otherwise indicated please assume such readings are from Professor Cockell.

Chapter 1: Astrobiology and Life. Here Cockell traces out the prehistory of extra terrestrial studies. He discusses ancient thoughts and appropriately the speculations of Giordano Bruno who literally died for his belief in other worlds. To my eye the best feature of this chapter is Cockell's treatment of the great Erwin Schrodinger book: What is Life? (1944) Where I found Schrodinger's original prose more muddled and hard to follow Cockell neatly got to the heart of matters explaining clearly why life does not violate the second law of thermodynamics -- entropy -- but rather facilitates it.

The main other reading Cockell and I would site would be Schrodinger's What is Life?

Chapter 2: Matter the Stuff of Life. This chapter discusses gases, liquids and solids.

By way of additional reading Cockell recommends D. Tabor's Gases, Liquids and Solids. It looks like a good title but I haven't read it yet.

Chapter 3: Life's Structure. This is a great chapter where Cockell recounts different chemistries and solutions life might arise from. Science fiction fans will really like this one a lot!

Here Cockell recommends Peter Ward's excellent Life as We Do Not Know It (which I would also recommend). I would also recommend Isaac Asimov's Left Hand of the Electron. Like this chapter Asimov's book has chapters on chirality and different types of solvents. Plus, it's an Asimov book!

Chapter 4: Life's Structure. What is life? By this I mean what forms of recurring organic phenomenon constitute life. Eschewing the fruitless philosophical direction this chapter could take Cockell expertly focuses on the real inquiry and in so doing mightily informs readers about the borderline of existence.

Here Cockell recommends A. Pross' What is Life?

Chapter 5: Energy for Life. This chapter is interesting for how it could shed light (no pun intended) on the prospects for life on bodies like Europa where sunlight is rare. If Earth's biomass overwhelmingly relies on solar power would feed life on worlds like Europa?

Here Cockell recommends O. Morton's Eating the Sun.

Chapter 6: Tree of Life. This book discusses the inter relationship between life on Earth. Like everything Cockell writes it's awesome.

For his part here Cockell recommends books like Gould's Wonderful Life and E.O. Wilson's Diversity of Life. Here I'd recommend Richard Dawkins' Ancestor's Tale.

Chapter 8: Elements of Life. This is sort of a top down view and richly enlightening.

Here Cockell recommends Cosmos by Carl Sagan (which like everyone else I loved), Martin Rees' Our Cosmic Habitat and Lawrence Krauss' Universe from Nothing (a recommendation I would happily join in).

Chapter 9: Astrochemistry. This chapter builds nicely from chapter 8.

Here Cockell recommends S. Kwok's Stardust: Cosmic Seeds of Life.

Chapter 10: Early Earth. This chapter is richly illuminating for how much new information we've recently gathered about the early formation of our planet.

Here Cockell recommends J.I. Lunine's Earth: Evolution of a Habitable World.

Chapter 11: Origins of Life. According to Charles Darwin it all began in a warm pond somewhere, proving him prophetic at least as to the water based part of his prediction. For me this chapter alone justified the price of this book.

Here Cockell recommends D. Deamer's First Life. For my part I would I recommend Nick Lane's The Vital Question.

Chapter 12: History of Earth. Just like how chapter 9 builds logically from 8 chapter 12 builds logically from 11.

Here Cockell recommends R.M. Hazen's The Story of Earth.

Chapter 13: The Rise of Oxygen. How did Earth go from being an oxygen poor world (in terms of its atmosphere) to an oxygen rich one? Today Mars and Venus are perhaps most different from Earth -- and like each other -- for their similar carbon dioxide rich atmospheres, a feature Earth does NOT share. Why this is might be the most interesting question for biosphere science.

Here I would recommend Nick Lane's Oxygen.

Chapter 14: Mass Extinctions. Here Cockell does amazing work succinctly giving readers the basics on this issue.

He and I would both strongly recommend Benton's When Life Nearly Died.

Chapter 15: Habitability of Planets. As always Cockell does an awesome job giving readers the basics. Is life common? To answer this you need to know common habitable worlds are.

He and I would both strongly recommend Peter Ward's Rare Earth.

Chapter 16: Astrobiology of Mars. This might be Cockell's most strong chapter for how he brings all the threads together while admittedly the huge tracts of ignorance which sadly still characterize our (lack of) knowledge about the Red Planet.

Here Cockell recommends Pyle and Mannings' Destination Mars.

Chapter 17: Moons of Giant Planets. This is another VERY STRONG chapter, made even better by Cockell's expert use of very good source material. See book recommendations. In my opinion no place more than Europa gives us hope for life off Earth yet still in our solar system.

Here Cockell -- and I -- both recommend Lornez' Titan Revealed and Greenberg's Unmasking Europa.

Chapter 18: Exoplanets. Cockell provides a circa 2014 state of exoplanets. Wisely he tells readers to keep posted with current developments as well.

Here he recommends Seager's Exoplanets but I would also recommend anything by Dimitar Sasselov. I'm a huge fan of his.

Chapter 19: Search for ET. This is a just fun chapter, much like chapter 3.

Here Cockell recommends Paul Davies' Eerie Silence, a very good book, and Carl Sagan's Search for Intelligent Life in the Universe.

Chapter 20: Our Civilization. Or: Our Interstellar Future? The question mark is mine here

Here Cockell recommends Dr. Zubrin's Case for Mars, an excellent book. He also mentions his own book Space on Earth which would also be a good work because Cockell wrote it.

OH AND YEAH...I messed up. In writing this I inadvertently forgot to mention Cockells chapter on the Limits of the Biosphere which is too bad because it was a great chapter. Interested readers would do well to also read Cockell's Impossible Extinction.

If you got nothing else from this review get this: this is an excellent summary of this important topic and more than worth the price of the book. Indeed certain chapters alone would justify the price.

Great intro to astrobiology
By R. Knight
I took the Coursera Astrobiology course with Professor Cockell and loved it. I highly recommend this book as a first step into learning more about astrobiology. You'll be more informed on how life evolves, the impact life has on the environment, and how we can detect that on other planets even in other solar systems.

Astrobiology is a very exciting area of study as we are closing in on finding life on other planets and I recommend this book to start your journey.

Life on the Earth and beyond, easily understood.
By Lauren S. Rogers
I teach high school astronomy, and I took Prof. Cockell's online astrobiology course on Coursera. Twice. It was a great course, and this book is a great volume to accompany the course or to read alone.

Neural Darwinism: The Theory Of Neuronal Group Selection, by Gerald Edelman

Already the subject of considerable pre-publication discussion, this magisterial work by one of the nation’s leading neuroscientists presents a radically new view of the function of the brain and nervous system. Its central idea is that the nervous system in each individual operates as a selective system resembling natural selection in evolution, but operating by different mechanisms. By providing a fundamental neural basis for categorization of the things of this world it unifies perception, action, and learning. The theory also completely revises our view of memory, which it considers to be a dynamic process of recategorization rather than a replicative store of attributes. This has deep implications for the interpretation of various psychological states from attention to dreaming.Neural Darwinism ranges over many disciplines, focusing on key problems in developmental and evolutionary biology, anatomy, physiology, ethology, and psychology. This book should therefore prove indispensable to advanced undergraduate and graduate students in these fields, to students of medicine, and to those in the social sciences concerned with the relation of behavior to biology. Beyond that, this far-ranging theory of brain function is bound to stimulate renewed discussions of such philosophical issues as the mind-body problem, the origins of knowledge, and the perceptual basis of language.

Why the brain is nothing like a computer by a Nobel laureate
By A Customer
The distinguished Nobel Laureate proposes a global brain theory that demonstrates that the brain does not work like a computer but rather operates under principles of selection that assure individuality, autonomy, imagination, etc. Since this book was published in 1986, the essentials of its proposals have been confirmed and absorbed at almost all levels of neurobiological and psychological inquiry. More accessible are two subsequent books, "The Remembered Present" and "Bright Air, Brilliant Fire"

Not an easy read, but worth the effort
By John Schmidt schmidt@wsuhub.uc.twsu.edu
Mike Vanier's experience with Edelman's prose gave the typical bioassay result: its hard to read Edelman's books. I often try to imagine the state of mind of people in 1875 who tried to wade through Darwin's "Origin of Species" or someone who came across the work of Gregor Mendel in the 1890's. Unfortunately for the Science of Mind, Mike is just the kind of person Edelman might have hoped to be able to reach. Well, Mike, did you read right through the Bible (or substitute "Your First Calculus Textbook" for "Bible") the first time you picked it up? There really is a forest in "Neural Darwinism" once you get past the trees.
The claim "his ideas are neither new, nor original, nor correct" is one of the standard put-downs of the academic world. Anyone who works on non-trivial scientific issues and is intelectually honest will admit that his work in based on ideas taken from others and that his work is incomplete and contains errors. Edelman makes these admissions. Edelman's ideas about how brains can learn and function to produce what we experience as minds are positive contributions to science and worth getting to know.

Grounding Psychology in Neuroscience
By Samuel T. Goldberg
Nobelist Gerald Edelman "theory of neuronal group selection" can be taken to provide a neurological understanding for psychoanalytic theory and experience. Because of the dense overlapping of dendrites and
axons in gray matter, a given area of cortex is capable of a varying
array of responses to a given input. Of the many possible responses,
one inevitably leads to the strongest, most adaptive, or rewarding
output. Suppose that this "fittest" response were "selected" for
synaptic changes enhancing the likelihood of future firing of just
that pattern of response when the same or similar input next arrives.
That pattern of function would have "won" in a Darwinian competition
to dominate the activity of that group of neurons when those same or
similar experiential conditions occur again. (I hope the reader can
hear in this a basis for transference experience: the neuronal response previously selected, perhaps by childhood experience, will be reactivated again in the future under specifically evocative conditions.)
We can thus anticipate a direct neurophysiologic account for how
"object relations" may in part derive from internalized__introjected__ experiences with objects and with their functions. Each experience in present real time consists of, is generated by, and resides in the activation of neural groups, interconnected in an ad-hoc network, distributed throughout the brain anatomically, and thus involving many functions of sensation, perception, motor function, emotion and cognition. The specific functioning of that network just then may be in effect "selected" by facilitative synaptic changes; its components might be be predisposed to fire together again under the right conditions.
Reentrant signalling over anatomically complete loops probably allows
anatomically distributed (distant) neuronal groups continuously to
communicate with one another and to synchronize their activities,
according to Edelman. Groups active in one area (eg, visual) can thus
reciprocally excite and cause synaptic enhancement of groups in a
separate area (eg, tactile). Edelman points out that particular
patterns of response in one brain "map" (consisting of many groups)
thus can become functionally associated with particular patterns in
other(s). Responses to present inputs can thus be linked to previous
patterns , across maps. Thus, a sight can stimulate the memory of a
touch. A sound, perhaps a spoken word or melody (obviously lots of unaddressed complexity here) can stimulate and reactivate a visual, operational, or cognitive memory, and, "inscribing" on it in the present, change it.
A mapping of many such selected groups could thus provide the neurophysiologic correlate to and substrate for unconscious object representations, which could potentially, if later reactivated, be expressed as affect-full object-related fantasies, impulses, and behaviors, potentially conscious, yet, perhaps exerting a neurologic influence that could remain unconscious.
A potentially responsive neural network representing past experience
will be activated, Edelman theorizes, if current input is a "good
enough match" to previous input which led to the original synaptic
enhancement. That is, if enough of its neighboring, or synaptically
linked, groups are activated ("the present context"), it will be
activated too. Thus, the present experience is categorized according to previous experience. Thus, presentation of a current object (eg, the
analyst) may activate a sufficient number of groups previously
functionally related in experience of the original object ( eg, a
parent), and thus a "memory", specific feeling state, or a behavioral repetition may arise.
This perhaps provides some neurophysiologic correlate to Charles Spezzano's recent observation that, "the immediate
situation is idiosyncratically and unconsciously put by us into a category of
situations and it is this idiosyncratic and unconscious categorizing that
leads to the feeling we have... Still, the patient may hear us saying that,
while we see them putting the immediate event into a category that leads to
a feeling, we don't understand why it has to be put into that category (don't
understand in the sense that we see how it could just as easily be put into
other unconscious meaning categories and is categorized by the patient in an
idiosyncratic way, maybe one we trace historically..."
How does the daily free-associative process work? The superolateral prefrontal cortex, "connected to a multitude of (remote) sensory association areas and limbic and paralimbic cortex," apparently may address and retrieve representations of memories from many fields distributed in the brain. It has been shown in pet scan studies consistently to be activated in tasks which are not run by external stimuli, ie, it is activated in tasks (eg, "visualize walking down your street and turning left at the corner") requiring organization by the brain itself of itself. (ROland, 1993)

In Edelman's model, the continuous reciprocal communication via reentrant signalling between maps of neural groups activated in current experience and those previously enhanced and synchronized in past experience (eg, with the original objects) allows the two sets reciprocally to "translate" or to "inscribe" their activities upon one another. This furthers our account of the brain activity in free association. The functional interaction between maps may permit continuous rearrangement according to unpredictable variations in the environment, (eg, the analyst's challenging an accustomed assumption, or "destabilizing a compromise formation", with a question, or action.) THus, past and present are recategorized in terms of one another, producing change in neurologic and thus in psychic structure. The present real experience with and of the analyst thus can "insinuate itself" into the prior arrangements ( the prior neuro-psychic structure), necessarily reorganizing the object relations constellation (transmuting internalization).
"We do not simply store images or bits but become more richly endowed with the capacity to categorize in connected ways." (Rosenfeld, 1986) Increasing the number of neural arrangements by which one experience is compared to, contrasted with, and categorized according to prior experience or fantasy allows greater richness and flexibility in functioning, one result of a successful psychoanalysis.

Chapter 1

Toxins, Toxins, Toxins: Raising Healthy Children in a Poisoned World

When Brayen Perez was nine years old, he ran into the kitchen, grabbed a bottle of what he thought was Gatorade off the counter, and chugged it. His mouth and throat on fire, Brayen screamed in pain. He had no idea that his father had borrowed Drano from a neighbor to unclog the sink and poured it into the Gatorade bottle. Brayen spent the next thirty-two days in the ICU unable to swallow or talk, fed through a feeding tube. He’s better now, but his father still hasn’t forgiven himself.

Children in America have also been poisoned by windshield wiper fluid (mistaken for Kool-Aid) and tiki torch fuel (thought to be apple juice). Some recover. Others aren’t as lucky. Though immediately rushed to the hospital, Oklahoma toddler Jhonethyn Bumpas died three hours after a mistake like this.

It’s not hard for parents to understand that chemicals like Drano are extremely toxic and that they need to do everything they can to keep them away from their children. But it is much harder for parents to understand that even very small amounts of everyday chemicals, though not immediately poisonous, can devastate our children, especially their developing brains.

I tell parents that when it comes to toxins, one plus one does not equal two: It could equal ten, or one hundred. When we mix small amounts of toxic chemicals together, it can create a much larger negative effect than separate exposure to either toxin on its own. Your child may be able to withstand repeated exposure to something harmful, but the toxin accumulates in his system and may eventually cause harm over an extended period of time (like cigarette smoke or X-rays). The amount, the route of entry, the timing of exposure, the individual sensitivity to the chemical, and the presence of other toxins in the body are all important aspects of toxicity. Developing fetuses and infants are most vulnerable to harm.

I’m Worried Most About Your Baby’s Brain

The CDC currently estimates that one in every forty-five American children has an autism spectrum disorder.

In addition to autism, we have seen exponential rises in other brain-related problems among children, including attention deficit disorders, anxiety, and depression.

While genetics are part of the equation, I believe that we are poisoning our children’s brains at a time when they are most vulnerable, a time when they are developing rapidly, exposing them both to untested chemicals and to known neurotoxins. Autism is an environmental disorder, an epidemic that we have caused by failing to practice evidence-based medicine. I’m telling you this not to scare you but to empower you. You need to know the environmental toxins that are damaging to neurodevelopment, and hence are likely contributing to the autism epidemic and other developmental and mental health conditions, so that you can do everything you can to avoid them and have a healthy baby.

Families who have children with autism and other neurological disorders often come to me because I have a reputation for helping these children using integrative medicine and approaches that will promote their own natural biochemistry and allow them to best heal and recover. I don’t have a special cure for autism; unfortunately no one does. But I am an open-minded doctor who is not afraid to educate myself about remedies that work, to individualize medicine, and to look at the whole child. I listen to parents. The approach I use is also embraced by many functional medicine doctors and naturopaths (doctors who have trained in both Western and alternative medicine), as well as integrative medicine physicians like me. We try to understand the root causes of the conditions we are treating. We test for genetic vulnerabilities. We heal by restoring biochemistry, aiding the body’s ability to remove toxins, and using diet and nutrition, along with medication, to recover damaged health.

How do I know autism is something we doctors are helping to cause? Because in more than a thousand children who were born into my practice since 2008 whose parents follow my vaccine-friendly plan, there have been no new cases of autism.

And I am not alone. My medical colleagues across the country who have adopted similar vaccine-friendly protocols and begun spacing out vaccines for infants, as well as eschewing vaccines in families at risk for autism, are also seeing excellent results.

Number of children diagnosed with autism whose parents presumably followed the advice of mainstream American pediatricians: one in forty-five.

Number of children diagnosed with autism whose parents followed my vaccine-friendly plan: zero.

Toxins That May Be Implicated in ADHD, ADD, Anxiety, Autism, and Other Developmental Delays

Acetaminophen (also called paracetamol), a pain reliever found in more than six hundred over-the-counter and prescription medications, including DayQuil, Robitussin, Sudafed, Tylenol, and Vicks

Aluminum, a metal injected as an adjuvant in vaccines and other pharmaceutical products, also found as a contaminant in intravenous nutritional products

Aspartame (NutraSweet, also called E951), an artificial sweetener used as a sugar substitute in processed foods and beverages

Endocrine disruptors, any chemicals that interfere with the human endocrine (hormone) system, including pesticides, herbicides, chemical softeners in plastic, flame retardants, and chemicals used in agriculture, disease control, manufacturing, and industrial processing. Known endocrine disruptors include BPA, DDT, DEHP, DES, dioxin, PCBs, and PCBEs.

Fluoride, a chemical added to drinking water and found in toothpaste, pesticides, Teflon pans, and processed foods and beverages

Methanol, a chemical found in cigarette smoke, canned and jarred foods, smoked fish and meat, and any food product that contains aspartame

Mercury, an element found in thimerosal (a mercury-based preservative widely used in infant vaccines until 2001 and still used in some flu, DTaP, DT, and meningococcal vaccines), dental amalgams (fillings), fish, shellfish, and animals that eat fish, released into the air from coal-burning factories and aluminum smelters.

What We Don’t Know Can Hurt Us

A doctor I know watched one of his sons line up toy cars for hours, every day, for years, without admitting something might be wrong with his son’s brain. “He’s just all boy,” this dad would say. His wife agreed. His son couldn’t learn his ABCs in kindergarten and had almost no memory or recall. School was especially hard for him. But it wasn’t until he came home from third grade and said to his father, “Dad, I’m the dumbest kid in the class,” that his parents allowed themselves to admit that something was really wrong.

Tests revealed that this little boy had high levels of heavy metals in his body, as well as an MTHFR defect, a mutation in the genetic code that causes metabolism disruption, often making it difficult to get rid of toxins. (For more on MTHFR defects, see Chapter 2.)

Before they realized the severity of their son’s disorder, this family was not worried about staying away from processed foods, eating organic, filtering their water, or avoiding toxins in any other way. A doctor married to a nurse, they certainly never would have thought to question the timing or necessity of any vaccine, ultrasound, or other recommended intervention. But their son seemed to have been gradually poisoned by harmful environmental exposures over time.

And of course this led to my friend beating himself up. “We did this to him,” he insisted, holding his fist to his brow. “My wife drank Crystal Light throughout the pregnancy. She took acetaminophen for every ache and pain and agreed to multiple ultrasounds.”

Was it their fault? Was it their pediatrician’s? Was it the government’s? Was it the pharmaceutical companies’? It doesn’t matter. What matters is that their son’s brain dysfunction and learning challenges could have been avoided. That story could be anyone’s.

Our children know we love them, and the harm we do is never intentional. But I’m calling on you to be intentional, educate yourself, and decide now to make small but vital changes that will improve every aspect of your child’s health.

Does Acetaminophen Trigger Autism?

Aspirin was the pain reliever of choice in the United States until the early 1980s, when evidence emerged associating aspirin and Reye’s syndrome, an extremely rare but fatal condition that manifests as swelling in the brain and liver. By the mid-1980s, as a result of concern over Reye’s syndrome in young children, as well as very successful advertising by Johnson & Johnson, acetaminophen essentially replaced aspirin as the primary treatment for fever and pain in pregnant women and small children. The main ingredient in Tylenol, it’s also found in more than six hundred prescription and over-the-counter medications (including NyQuil, Sudafed, and Percocet).

But in 2008 a team of five scientists led by Stephen Schultz at the University of California, San Diego, published an important study that compared eighty-three cases of children with autism with eighty controls. The study found that children who took Tylenol after getting the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine were significantly more likely to have autism than children who did not. While the study had several weaknesses—it has a relatively small sample size, it relies on parental recall, and it includes no validation of clinical records to confirm either the autism diagnoses or the use of acetaminophen—the findings were significant. Children given acetaminophen between twelve and eighteen months of age were eight to twenty times more likely to have autism than children given ibuprofen or no pain-killer. Parents of children who became autistic also reported more side effects following the MMR vaccine, including fever, rash, diarrhea, irritability, and seizures, than parents of children who did not.

Taken alone, this research may not be enough to stop medical professionals and parents from using acetaminophen, which is, after all, an effective pain reliever for many. But considered in the context of other published studies and laboratory research, Schultz’s survey associating acetaminophen with autism should have raised a huge red flag. We know from research conducted in the 1980s on laboratory rats, as well as studies done on other mammals in the 1990s, that acetaminophen—especially in the presence of testosterone—can wreak havoc on living cells, causing mitochondrial disruptions and depletion of glutathione. I tell my patients to think of glutathione as nature’s mop—an essential biochemical that your body needs to bind with toxins and escort them out of your system. For whatever reason, children with autism have been found to have lower glutathione levels. Giving already susceptible children Tylenol and other acetaminophen-containing drugs, especially in combination with a known neurotoxin (aluminum, say, injected intramuscularly via a vaccine), may be the last straw for their brains.

A recent study by researchers at the University of Massachusetts revealed that autism is much more prevalent in circumcised males than in those who are not circumcised. The researchers don’t suggest that circumcision causes autism but instead point their finger at the pain reliever given to infant boys during the procedure, concluding that a growing body of experimental and clinical evidence links acetaminophen metabolism to autism and related developmental disorders. But perhaps most worrisome is a Danish study of more than 64,000 mothers and children published in April 2014 in the journal JAMA Pediatrics, which found that use of acetaminophen (but not ibuprofen) during pregnancy was associated with significantly higher risks of attention deficit disorders in their offspring. The more acetaminophen mothers took during pregnancy, the more likely it was that their children would have severe attention deficit disorders and hyperactivity.

When I was in medical school in the early 1980s, we were told that the risk of Reye’s syndrome made giving aspirin to infants and small children too dangerous. I am sorry to say that I was an active part of the acetaminophen revolution. Young, energetic, upbeat sales representatives from Johnson & Johnson visited the hospital, bringing us doughnuts on the late shift, dropping off free samples, and printing out the latest information about the dangers of aspirin and the benefits of Tylenol for us to share with our patients. We unquestioningly gave Tylenol to children just before administering vaccines and urged parents to use it right after vaccines, especially for the whole-cell pertussis vaccine that was notorious for causing alarmingly high fevers and seizures. (It has since been taken off the market.) Clinically, we saw that administering acetaminophen reduced the frequency of seizures after vaccines, so we pushed it on parents. We had no idea that our recommendations could be contributing to the explosion of neurological damage, developmental delays, and immune issues among children.

The association between aspirin and Reye’s syndrome has since been challenged. A comprehensive review published in 2007 concluded, “The suggestion of a defined cause-effect relationship between aspirin intake and Reye syndrome in children is not supported by sufficient facts” (my emphasis). Nonetheless prenatal and pediatric use of acetaminophen continues despite the mounting evidence against it.

Acetaminophen has other strikes against it. It is the leading cause of acute liver failure in the United States; at least one meta-analysis and one carefully designed randomized study have found that it is actually not a very effective pain reliever; and it seems to cause liver abnormalities even at proper doses. Because it’s found in so many different products, and parents are not in the habit of reading medication ingredient lists, it is all too easy to inadvertently give a child a toxic amount.

Until we have more information, I believe it is irresponsible, even dangerous, for doctors to recommend acetaminophen-containing products to pregnant women or small children. Some researchers, like Duke University Medical School associate professor William Parker, Ph.D., who has been studying immune dysfunction for over a decade, believe that stopping the use of acetaminophen in pregnancy and infancy would lead to a dramatic and immediate decline in autism. In order to better protect our children’s brains and bodies, I tell my patients it is best to stop all use of acetaminophen during pregnancy and infancy.

I also recommend that pregnant moms and parents of young children be cautious about using ibuprofen, the main ingredient in Advil and Motrin. Though this pain reliever is less toxic than acetaminophen, this class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory pharmaceutical medication can cause ulcers, bleeding, or holes in the stomach or intestinal lining and may be a contributing cause of leaky gut syndrome and celiac disease. Most doctors won’t tell you that nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen are responsible for more than 100,000 hospitalizations and 16,000 deaths a year.

Luckily there are several effective nontoxic options when you or your child needs pain relief. Headaches and aches and pains during pregnancy (and also in small children) are often caused by dehydration, excessive fatigue, and stress. Treating those underlying symptoms with massage, better sleep habits, effective stress-management techniques, and better hydration can make a big difference. Pregnant women and children also report relief using a few drops of lavender oil on a cool washcloth on the head, a practice that Yale-trained Aviva Romm, M.D., an integrative family physician based in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts, also recommends. Magnesium deficiency is a common cause of headaches, so Epsom salt baths (which contain magnesium that is absorbed through the skin) can also provide relief. Eating magnesium-rich foods (dark leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, and fish that is low on the food chain) is another safe and effective strategy that gives whole-body benefits with no harmful side effects (unless you hate the smell of fish). Finally, turmeric, a spice derived from a ginger-like root beloved in Indian cuisine, is a powerful anti-inflammatory.

The statistics speak for themselves:

The Appendix E of this book really tells you all you need to know:
A team of researchers have been reviewing and tabulating the health outcomes 2,230 children over age two and under age seven who were patients at my clinic, Integrative Pediatrics, from June 2008 (which is when my clinic first opened) to February 2015. We are in the process of compiling this data for a retrospective study approved by Western Institutional Review Board. We are examining incidence of autism, developmental delays, hospitalization a, infectious diseases, and sick visits. The following data is preliminary but serves to answer one key question: Does Dr Paul's Vaccine-Friendly Plan help reduce the incidence of autism?

Patients were divided into three groups as follows:

Group 1: Following Dr Paul's Vaccine-Friendly Plan:
These children were either born into my practice of established care by the two month well baby visit. They did not get the birth or the infant hepatitis B vaccine. If they got the hepatitis A vaccine, it was after age two. If they got the MMR and the chicken pox vaccines, it was at or after age three.
There were 1,098 children in Group 1.

Group 2: Unvaccinated: Because of parental choice, these children had no vaccines.
There were 238 children in Group 2.

Group 3: Other/Most Vaccinated: Though there was some individual variability, many children in Group 3 were vaccinated according to CDC guidelines.
There were 894 children in Group 3.

Group Total Autism/ASD Rate
1 1,098 0 0
2 238 0 0
3 894 15 1/60

Using the previous CDC autism rate of one in fifty, we would have expected approximately twenty-two cases of autism in Group 1, but there were no autism or ASD (autism spectrum disorder) diagnoses.

We would have expected to have approximately four cases of autism in Group 2, but there were no autism or ASD diagnoses.

We would have expected to have approximately seventeen cases of autism in Group 3, and there are fifteen autism/ASD diagnoses, which mirrors the national average. This data demonstrates with a huh level of statistical significance that the Vaccine-Friendly Plan - as well as not vaccinating at all - was associated with less autism/ASD.

Must Read for Raising Healthy Kids
By mc2cmt
Dr Paul grew up in what is now Zimbabwe and attended Dartmouth for his medical degree. He's seen first-hand the benefits of vaccines and modern medicine, and practiced by the book, following CDC and AAP guidelines for everything in his pediatrics practice. However, he noticed that parents who followed his advice had kids who kept getting sicker and sicker. Dr Paul went on to adjust his guidelines for everything from vaccines to nutrition to Tylenol, and has seen his patients thrive. Since 2008, he has zero new cases of autism in his practice among parents who follow his guidelines (roughly 1,100 kids) despite the fact that many kids in this group are at higher risk, due to siblings with ASD. This book is full of research-backed advice for everything needed to raise healthy kids. It was the kick in the pants I needed to get my family back to a completely real foods diet. I also greatly appreciated some of the updated but still not widely publicized info on vaccine safety. The Vaccine Book by Dr Sears goes into much more detail on each vaccine, the diseases they prevent, the ingredients they're composed of, and the risk of side effects. This book by Dr Paul gives more of a brief overview of all those things, but includes his recommendation for each one (Dr Sears lays out the pros and cons and lets the reader make up their own mind). I loved how this book addressed so many aspects of raising healthy kids and not just vaccines. It's an easy and 100% worthwhile read for all parents.

Comprehensive and balanced
By momofsix
I pre-ordered this book a few months ago when I first heard about it, and am I sure glad I did. I had planned to give it as a gift to a cousin who is expecting, but like it so much I'll have to order an extra copy for myself. I have no more little babies at home, but am finding the information in it to be incredibly comprehensive for children of all ages. It is written in a reassuring, friendly, and informative way, covers a huge range of health-related topics (not just vaccinations) and, finally, is refreshingly balanced on the issue of vaccines. Both Dr. Thomas and Jennifer Margulis have, as they state in their acknowledgments, chosen to vaccinate their children, and were themselves vaccinated quite a bit as adults (more than the average American adult, I'd venture to say). Both of them have had experience living abroad and seeing firsthand the good that vaccines can do. But they also have a clear-sighted perspective that gives parents the information they need to make their own sound decisions. I raised my children abroad and remember how confused I was by all the different vaccine schedules in different countries, and the information I had to gather then on my own helped me later when I would guide international parents living abroad in the US and had to have their children vaccinated here (their biggest questions were usually: why so many vaccines? why so many at once? Why so early?). Today, if I were helping a confused parent trying to wade through all the information out there, all I'd have to do is to refer them to The Vaccine-Friendly Plan.
