The Compleat Dancing Master is a translation of the Rechtschaffener Tantzmeister (1717), by Gottfried Taubert, a monumental and encyclopedic treatise on the universe of dance during the musical High Baroque and the dawn of the Beauchamps-Feuillet dance notation system. Taubert (1679-1746) worked in Danzig (now Gdansk) and later in Leipzig at the same time as Johann Sebastian Bach. His work is in three parts, covering the history, morality, and social utility of dance; the theory and practice of dance; and the métier of the dancing master, the teacherstudent relationship, and the occasions and customs connected with social dance. Due to its sheer vastness and linguistic difficulties, the Rechtschaffener Tantzmeister has been largely ignored until recently, even by those who read German.
Volume I of The Compleat Dancing Master provides an overview of Taubert’s magnum opus and a master key to some of his most important themes and ideas - in short, a mode of entry into Taubert’s world - and includes a biographical sketch and essays on specific topics whose wider significance is discussed in the order of their presentation by Taubert. Volume II is an English translation of Taubert’s entire, 1231-page text, including front and back matter - the first complete translation of this book in any language. The Compleat Dancing Master is addressed to dance historians, historical dancers, choreographers, musicologists, students of German eighteenth-century culture, and dix-huitièmistes of all types.

About the Author
Tilden Russell, Professor emeritus of Music at Southern Connecticut State University, is co-author, with Dominique Bourassa, of The Menuet de la cour (2007). Best known for his work on the minuet and scherzo, and on Gottfried Taubert, he has written and lectured also on the comic in music, history of the violoncello, musical iconography, and Beethoven, with articles published in The Journal of Musicology, Journal of the American Musicological Society, Musical Quarterly, Acta musicologica, Imago musicae, Beethoven Forum, Dance Research, and elsewhere, including The New Grove, second edition. The Compleat Dancing Master, his translation of Taubert’s Rechtschaffener Tantzmeister, has been over a dozen years in the making.

I am awaken

The words are too precious and sacred to be read silently and kept in your head. Each poem is meant for you to read to someone special in your life, or meant to be read to you by someone you have loved or have loved you or hurt you. The words are a beautiful lullaby, softly spoken, in whispers, but with burning emotions. The words are a graceful song, but surely not to put you to sleep. Instead, they are words that awaken your soul, heals and hammers your heart. Regardless if they are calm or painful, the words remind you that you are alive and able to feel all these emotions. They remind you to stay awake for love.

Published for his eightieth birthday, this remarkable book serves as summary of this great theologian's life's work

Including a lengthy and life-long interview, some sermons given shortly before publication, other documents and correspondence, as well as a Scriptural and poetical selection, etc., this seemingly slim volume contains conprehensive and comprehensible material from throughout the life of this great Catholic theologian, the Reverend Father Schillebeeckx, rendering much difficult and technical material more accessible to the layman, explaining many doubts, clarifying concerns and misunderstandings, and making this great and warm and human heart and soul blessed by God with a mighty intellect and love for God and the Church closer to us all.

The sermons here transcribed are especially helpful, as they were delivered shortly before publicaiton. One of these sermons beautifully (as always with this great and Catholic Theologian) declares his deep Faith in the Resurrection, with his profound attempt at explanation of this Faith.

A few people, beating a long dead horse, continue unfairly to question unjustly this profound Catholic soul, yet his works will live on long after us who are here and now. His great trilogy beginning with Jesus: An Experiment in Christology and continuing through Christ: The Experience of Jesus as Lord, when the dust has settled and God continues whatever form of ecclesiology and apostolic succession a future humanity finds most significant in a future millenium through the on-going Pilgrim process of Ecclesiogenesis -, the prodigious theological work of the Reverend Father Schillebeeckx will be gratefully received and respected as has been his fellow Dominican St Thomas Aquinas Summa Theologica (translated by Fathers of the English Dominican Province) (5 Volume Set) once the outraged controversy from the Angelic Doctor's own contemporaries had long been forgotten and we could learn to catch up with Aquinas enough to declare him the "official" theology, comprehending in part his intent, elaborate and minute methodology and his labor's true significance for understanding our Faith. Thus shall come to Father Schillebeeckx. The bookburners cannot win, as one fictional one did so tragically and painfully and Pyrricly and temporarily in the semiotic philosopher Umberto Ecco's great novel The Name of the Rose: including the Author's Postscript.

Fortunately we do not have to wait for (and indeed we cannot physically wait to see but from Heaven) what future generations of Catholics will receive and comprehend, as this brief volume makes much which is not now understood very clear, including not only a complete biographical interview and an excellent comprehensive inrtoduction, but also discussing several points of theology within their historical context.

For example much background noise has arisen around the poorly understood term transignification. A few have whittled this word down to an easily digestible monosyllable of sign, having limited their experience and understanding of sign to, for instance, that of a concrete physical highway road sign which indicates the way to go to a certain destination using alphanumeric and graphical symbols which are not in themselves the way but only point out the way. Thus the sign to Cincinnatti is not in reality the road to Cincinatti.

This is very far from the true meaning of transignification, which comes from the Lacanian and semiotic and philosophical terms for signification, signifiers, signified, etc. The closest we may come in our common parlance is the word significant, which has itself lost much of its precision, power and, well, significance.

Thus a certain few stimulate and excite themselves to a great and delightful (for them) fever pitch by purposefully misunderstanding and mistinterpreting the true meaning of this term, inventing by their own dim and deceitful lights heresy where none exists.

I refer them therefore to pages 23 and 24 of this present volume where in the midst of interview questions regarding his post-Conciliar audience with Pope Paul VI, Father Schillebeeckx takes the opportunity to discuss this very term. Throughout this bascially biographical interview, Father Schillebeeckx humbly and passionately takes the light off himself and turns, as a great Domincan teacher and preacher, to explaining points of theology and of Faith, making of this interview something far more than originally intended.

Thus we here read (please remember the rough English translation cannot accurately reflect the Reverend Father's own words, nor are the footnotes his): "The Pope told me, 'I am truly content with what you said in your lectures at Domus Mariae on the Eucharist.' At that time I was defending transignification. The encyclical Mysterium fidei had just come out (this was Spetember 1965) and I began my lecture by praising the encyclical. I said that I was against transignification understood as pure symbolism and that transubstantiation(13) is a transignification in an ontological sense(14). The Pope told me: 'They've reported you've become one of us.' I didn't understand what he meant; I had the sensation of not having been clear. Why should I have become 'one of us?' I am one of the Church. Who are these 'us?'

"I certainly had observations to make on the encyclical, but I expressed them blandly. I had observations on transignification as pure symbolism. For me, transignification was ontological, something quite different from a physical transignification. Someone tried to explain the expression used by Paul VI as meaning that the Pope was not opposed to my ideas on the Eucharist.

"However, I didn't think this a very happy expression. He encouraged me to continue my research, expressed himself content with the lectures. I wanted to defend myself by saying something about my theology, but he wouldn't let me. At the end of the audience he took out a rosary from a drawer and said, 'Take it to your father.' And what about my mother? He gave me another one. Then he called the secretary who brought in the photographer. That was the end of the audience.

"At the door I met the Benedictine abbot Basil Hume, who was to become Archbishop of Westminister. He said to me, 'Fr. Schillebeeckx, keep going as you are. (pp. 23,24)"

The footnotes referred to state: "(13) transubstantiation is the transformation or conversion of the bread into the body and the wine into the blood. Transignificaiton is the transformation or conversion of the bread into the body and the wine into the blood. Transignification is a radical transformation of the ultimate meaning of what the bread is after cnosecration. Before consecration the bread is nutrition for the body, whereas after consecration the bread is totally spiritual nutrition. Transfinaliztion: the bread is bodily nutrition but the aim of the consecrated bread is a spiritual nutrition, a gift of Christ the saviour. Transignification and transfinalization are concepts nearer to the modern mentality. With these terms Schillebeeckx seeks to give a better expression to the anthropological significance of the eucharistic presence in relation to that of the believer and the church. The ultimate destination of the bread changes profoundly with consecration.

"(14) After the consecration the reality of the bread is something different, specifically the body of Christ."

So that settle it then. For the Reverend Father Schillebeeckx transignification is ontological. Case closed. Read this book.

For those few of you who slept through your Philosophy of Theology 101 course, I refer you to the excellent The HarperCollins Encyclopedia of Catholicism, specifically in its article on ontology, where this is described as a pre-Conciliar neo-Scholastic concern for the ground of all being based in God, to summarize very roughly and imperfectly. Thus for the Reverend Father Schillebeeckx, who celebrates this November 93 years of a rich and fruitful life in the Lord's service, remember him please in your prayers, who was trained twenty years before the Council (thus pre-Conciliar) in Dominican seminaries (thus Scholastic as Aquinas), ontology is a major concern. The Reverend Father Schillebeeckx here states as clearly and as strongly as he can that transignification is in no way a mere roadsign but a full and comprehensible expression in modern post-Kantian terminology of the very Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. Transignification is ontological means that the Host is no longer significantly bread but is truly the Body of Christ.

Arthur Miller's "After the Fall" takes the form of an investigation into the forces which give rise to incomplete and destructive human relationships. Its protagonist, Quentin, in whose mind the play is enacted, subscribes to a simple credo: "You tell the truth, even against yourself." The play is fabricated as a trial or, more fittingly, an inquest in which the moralist, Quentin, sits in judgment upon his own conscience, his own values, his own actions.

Quentin, now retired from the practice of law, examines and cross-examines all aspects of his being: his distorted emotions, marital complexities, and other intimate struggles. The result is that "After the Fall" becomes a big, demanding drama. When staged, the play typically occupies a full three and a half hours, time spent in a relentless search for answers. Has Quentin's life been lived in good faith? Can, in his remaining years, he reach beyond self-condemnation to some measure of hope? A tortured process of self-discovery finds him fighting against innate fear, his unwillingness to unearth what Miller labels "the seeds of his own destruction." It is a fundamental, personal need to know that serves as the backbone of this otherwise a loosely structured play. Whether you are reading the dialog and stage direction on the page, or are sitting in a theater audience, you will likely be engrossed in his journey, since this is your journey too.

For the personal is the universal. At the same time as we are learning of intimate events in Quentin's life, a universal drama unfolds. Miller's intent is for "After the Fall" to present a broad study of mankind's terrible predisposition to cruelty, our evasions of responsibility, and our final seizure by remorse. After wildly ranging over times past, the play returns us to the present where Quentin is considering marrying a German woman who survived the Holocaust -- an experience that permitted her to accept human blindness and failures. She is the catalyst helping him universalize his personal predicament. The climactic scene in this process finds Quentin pausing in the shadow of an imagined concentration camp tower looming over his meager self. He asks: "Who can be innocent again on this mountain of skulls? I tell you what I know! My brothers died here . . . but my brothers built this place; our hearts have cut these stones! And what's the cure!"

It is in "After the Fall" that Miller strives, with a greater urgency than in any of his other theater works, to enter into a dialog with essential works of twentieth-century thought and literature. Consider "Gerontion" (1920), in which T.S. Eliot posed the key question: "After such knowledge, what forgiveness?" Notice how, at the close of "After the Fall," Quentin seemingly confronts Eliot's entreaty: "Is the knowing all? And the wish to kill is never killed, but with some gift of courage one may look into its face when it appears, and with a stroke of love -- as to an idiot in the house -- forgive it; again and again . . . forever?"

Again and again: There was something in Miller's plea that reminded me of words uttered just a few years after the opening of "After the Fall." Before a stunned audience in Indianapolis, Indiana, on an evening in 1968 when news spread of the Rev. Martin Luther King's assassination, Robert F. Kennedy spoke. Without notes, at first haltingly but then with earned authority, Kennedy urged upon us this credo:

"We have to make an effort to understand, to get beyond, to go beyond these rather difficult times . . . . Aeschylus once wrote: `Even in our sleep, pain which cannot forget, falls drop by drop upon the heart, until in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom, through the awful grace of god.' What we need . . . is not division . . . not hatred . . . not violence and lawlessness . . . but is love and wisdom and compassion toward one another: A feeling of justice."

Great play. I love Arthur Millers work but this has to be one of my favorites of his. Really recommend this play. Ps: it's rumored to be written about his relationship with Marilyn Monroe. ;-)

A harrowing adventure of growing up in China 1954-80

This book, by Liang Heng, apparently co-written by his wife Miss Shapiro, is a very quick read, one of those books with a well-flowing style to its prose and simplicity and power of its description. You don't want to put it down.

It is a story of how Liang Heng grew up as his family was torn apart by the ever changing and eratic policies enforce by the state of which Chariman Mao sat at the helm. He was probably about five when his mother was branded a rightist devationist. She had been encouraged to make criticisms of the party during the "Let one hundred flowers bloom" campaign and after honestly thinking it over, decided to criticize her bosses at the local police department for elitism and abuse of power. Of course, the Hundred Flowers campaign was eventually transformed into a rectification campaign. His mother was sent to the countryside,eventually being able to return once a month home to see her children and face the frenzied abuse of her husband, a very indocrinated, humorless, pious party member and journalist at the local state run paper. Liang's father for political safety eventaully got a new wife who, like the father, also had questionable associations and links with the old KMT regime. This new wife was posted as a school teacher in a far away city and due to bureaucratic restrictions on movement, they could not see each other for many years.

The most vivid parts of the book deal with the cultural revolution. Liang Feng as a zealous primary school student, initially lifted himself up at the beginning of this time by making cartoons of his teachers accusing them of being capitalist roader,bourgeois counterrevolutionaries, etc. But soon, his father got caught up in the trap because he was an intellectual, had briefly been part of a KMT group during the dark days of Chiang Kai Shek and the rapacious landlords before he was exposed to Maoism, and so on. Liang was branded a "stinking intellectual's son" and shunned and sometimes physically abused by his peers. His father was forced to go through many "struggle sessions" and paraded around town in a dunce cap.

The Cultural Revolution years are indeed described with the most simple and powerful indepth vivideness. The Cultural revolution for Liang had many harrowing adventures including his participation in mock long march and a stay in Peking to be part of a Red Guard group at a Musical conservatory during which period Liang caught a glimpse of Chairman Mao. Another episode deals with the armed combat of the rival "conservative" and "rebel" Red Guard groups and all sorts of splinter groups fighting for control of the city of Changsa, Liang's home town. Liang Heng gets caught in the middle of one battle and witnesses horrible death and destruction. He eventually joined a street gang made up of children of counterrevolutionaries and of communist china's lowest class, what Marx called the Lumpenproletariat. He spent some time being a cart pusher and custodian of a pig pen on a train,under the mentorship of the wise old migrant worker and street person Pockmarked Liu.

The climax of the book's vividness is probably when Liang Heng's father is transfered to the countryside for hard labor in a peasant commune. The particular commune where they are sent is in a very neglected area and the peasants very benighted. Liang's dad is assigned the duty of teaching Chairman Mao thought sessions to the peasants. Liang and his father are forced to live with a peasant and his wife, who have serious difficulty accomodating them. Unfortunately, Peking had launched another mass movement this time about elminating capitalist practices, and so the local leadership used the opportunity to harrass the peasants. The state gave this particular commune, in contrast to other areas, not much resources, and the peasants could only survive by raising revenue by selling produce from their livestock which was now being confiscated. During this episode, there are such notable incidents as Guo La Da' and the confiscation of his ducks. (...) The peasants in this commune seemed to be able to be more independent, beyond the reach of indoctrination if only because the government couldn't quite afford to put its tentacles into their remote area. Another incident deals with the hard suffering of Guo Lucky Wealth's wife, the wife of the peasant household they stayed in. She wanted to get pregnant but she had been manipulated into getting a birth control device put inside her. Guo Lucky Wealth's wife enlisted the services of a local witch doctor to make her fertile, but the witch doctor couldn't get quite the right potions.

After this point, the story loses some of its vividity as the events in his life are told more briefly. But it still is very interesting. By the early 70's, Liang Heng started to get some breaks, including being assigned a decent job at a factory to while he played for the factory's basketball team. He admits that though living standards on the whole improved(only slightly for all too many he claims) in China from the dark days of the KMT, he began to fully grasp that the cruelty, stratification and corruption in the economy and government in his society was quite different from the propaganda conception of what socialism was supposed to be. He tried to pursue girlfriends but his unfortunate political status ruined those relationship. Then he managed to get bribe his factory party officials and others to help him get accepted into college. This was after the lunacies of the Cultural revolution had died down and colleges were reoopened for competitive examination after the "Gang of Four" and their followers were purgedd after Mao's death. He eventually met Miss Shapiro who was working as a foreign language teacher at his college and fell in love with her. After college, his first postition was that of a school teacher and was dissapointed that though the post-Mao era was seemingly enacting great changes, the students he taught still exhibited the same inability to think critically that his generation had. The students still had alot of their time devoted to blindly memorizing the same silly Party slogans and being trained to worship the state, as Liang did as a youngster.

Simply told, poignant memoir of enormous events

Son of the Revolution is a spare book, the sort of small biography you might pick up and read in a couple of days some weekend. It packs an enormous punch, though. Liang Heng, its author, experienced essentially every side of the cultural revolution in China, and his graceful, somewhat understated prose only acts as a sort of smooth surface to the roiling undercurrent of those huge events.
This book often gets assigned as a college-level textbook for History courses, and it's easy to see why. Liang Heng literally experienced almost everything about the cultural revolution first hand. In the course of the book, he lives both sides of almost any set of events you can think of. For example, as a young boy he's involved in a revolutionary group that's excitedly denouncing capitalist influences at its school. In a fit of enthusiasm, he draws a scathing poster of a favorite teacher. Almost immediately he feels tremendously guilty over the drawing. His father and he talk about the teacher's reaction, and Liang Heng goes to apologize. Then, just when the teacher's benevolence and the father's wisdom seem to have smoothed over this pang of overzealousness in the student, Liang Heng discovers that his father, too, has been denounced in a poster, and that he himself has been shut out of his revolutionary group -- as the son of an intellectual. Within a single day he's gone from revolutionary youth to excluded son of a reactionary. He goes home that night to find his sisters threatening to move away to live at school, so as to distance themselves from his supposedly traitorous father. His father sits whispering, almost to himself, that the children should sincerely believe in the party and Mao, and that things will turn out right if they do so.
This book is filled with tumultuous turns like that. Just when you've seen the sharp edge of one dilemma, it changes shape and presents another side. Throughout all those twists, Liang Heng keeps a sympathy for those around him that brings you through the book. He can understand why people caught in these events acted like they did, and he doesn't seem to really hate anyone for it despite all he's been through. His father and mother, who divorced early during the revolution because of his mother's political background, become very different objects of sympathy, but neither one is regarded with disdain. (His father, in particular, becomes the sort of quietly tragic figure you'd find in some sprawling Russian historical novel.)
Other English language memoirs from these years in China don't approach the startling emotional clarity of this book. Life and Death in Shanghai, in particular, comes across as both shallower and more bitter. Son of the Revolution tells the entire story, first hand, with a sort of forgiveness, a sort of understanding, that I haven't forgotten in the six years since I first read it.
This is worth a rare (for me) five stars.

Angela's Ashes in Red China

When consolidating their rule over the most populous nation on Earth, the Red Chinese sought to create a modern industrialized state in place of a feudal and disorganized one. Requiring more than rapid industrialization to realize their goals, the communists also sought to suffuse every sector of Chinese society with rigid political mentality requiring not only strict party loyalty, but a state of constant revolution, in which individuals and communities constantly sought to prove their mastery of "revolutionary discipline". Various miniature revolutions shake China - turning friends and relatives against each other - with fearful consequences for those who couldn't convince the more politically reliable of their strongly "revolutionary" desires. Because the meaning of the revolution itself is vague, even those who would have thought their backgrounds free of "black marks", find themselves under the gun - whether because of views an individual no longer professes, or association with others having displayed a lack of revolutionary discipline or simply because one may comply with a dictate only to find the Party changed direction completely.
Liang Heng, whose birth coincided with Ho Chi Minh's epic victory over the French in 1954, suffered for all the above reasons. Never a "rightist" himself, Heng suffered horribly during China's ten year political unrest of the 1960's and 70's. Heng's mother, a loyal party member in the late 1950's, reluctantly obeys the party's order to criticize superiors during the "Hundred Flowers" movement. Heng, like many, is never sure if the follow-up to the "Flowers" (in which those who faithfully criticized their elders were then rounded up for their insuboridination) was a knee jerk reaction to the unexpected ferocity the earlier campaign engendered, or whether the earlier movement was intended to weed out those critics to begin with. Only the consequences - in which Heng's mother must wear the feared "rightist cap", forever soilng her revolutionary record and that of her family - is considered. When Heng's father, who writes for the Hunan daily, becomes suspect for his admitted youthful infatuation with the nationalistic Koumintang, the family's political reputation suffers even more. Though loyal communists, Heng finds his father's name listed as an enemy on the many revolutioanry placards around their home city of Changsha. The Party maxim's - stressing tolerance for those whose backgrounds evince youthful mistakes - does little for Heng, since the revolution is guided by fervor and not nuance. And, though Maosim meant that party loyalty superceded family loyalty (sorry Confucious), it didn't prevent family members from suffering for political sins of family members.
Through the turmoil - which evolves from parades to open warfare in the street using everything from sticks and stones to missiles - Heng avoids sanctimony. Heng suffered much of the chaos as a child, and isn't above admitting that he too wrote some revolutionary placards himself. He works hard to rehabilitate his father whose first major action is to cast out Heng's mother for her "rightist cap". Experience proved the decision, for its pain, proved correct, if insufficient, to protect the family. "Old Liang" himself suffered mightily for the cause, never once complaining. As a middle-aged exile, forced to bring the revolution to the peasants by joing them, Heng's father survived the indiginities of a country-bound city-types, never pausing to warm the lives of the peasants with Marxist fervor. Heng's private revolution, unlike the larger one surrounding him, is about nuance, and the narrative never attempts to surpass the perspective of a child of Heng's age during the cultural revolution. Like the more recent "Angela's Ashes", Heng knows that the more credible narrator is the one who feels and experiences rather than faithfully records. And the experience, rather than one of victimization is of survival. The revolution's true enemies are long gone by the time the cultural revolution degenerates into civil war, and only Heng's clear and non-judgmental narrative can spot that the war's victims and instigators are one and the same.

About the Author

Troy D. Allen is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Southern University. There, he teaches courses in African-American History, World Civilizations (Honors), and the History of Ancient Egypt, along with a course on Race Relations. Dr. Allen is the author of many articles, and also serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Black Studies. He recently edited a Special Edition of the Journal of Black Studies focused on the issues of Race, Class, and Poverty in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina

Indigenous African studies

A profound book on ancient indigenous African studies. The author is highly skill on the scholarship of the mis-named people in the region of northeastern Africa known today as Egypt. The book will more then likely upset European American who have been taught to believe that Africa history some how belong to Europeans, but the book is a great way to learn the kinship and social structure of an indigenous African people. Not surprising is the fact that these dark hued people are social structure as the other dark hued people of Africa. Read it for yourself and decide and don't learn to the same old nonsense! Professor Troy D. Allen, you did an amazing job!

Black Men and Red Men?

I purchased this book based solely on the title. Please don't be fooled by it. This book is not a scholarly treatise on the "Ancient Egyptian Family." It is a shockingly ignorant anti-Caucasian, anti-Semitic rant, with no academic value.

First of, let me say that racism is wrong, whether it is in the mind of a black person, a white person, a green person, or a purple person (and yes, that is purposely absurd, as is racism, but since his whole book is about color and racism, I'll continue the theme).

The author lets us know where he stands from the start, raging about the "European invasion" and the "enormous assault of Western culture" on Egypt. To him, Black = Good. African = Good. White = Bad. European = Bad. Semitic = Bad. The author is a very angry bigot.

You can usually assume that anyone that narrow minded and hostile has problems with logic and reasoning, and this foolish book backs that up with gusto. He has decided, for whatever reason, that Ancient Egyptian society followed a matrilineal organization simply because it was the "dominant mode of social organization in pre-colonial African societies," and he's not about to let the facts get in the way - in large part because he is unacquainted with the facts.

The author has no understanding of ancient Egyptian history, society, culture, language or grammar. He certainly is unaware that Ancient Egyptian civilization encompassed over 3,000 years of history, during which time there were many social changes. For instance, there are huge differences between the position of women during the Old Kingdom and the New Kingdom.

Black Men?

He freely reinterprets terms to fit his preconceived racist notions. One glaring and egregious example is his translation of the word "kmt," which he describes as Egypt's "authentic name." Well, no. Further, he says, "the name Kemet means literally `the country of the Black men.'" (Wow! Both racist and sexist at the same time!) Again, no, it doesn't. He goes on to mock those who use the actual and accurate translation of "black earth" or "black land" as being "Eurocentric and Semitic-centered." He's so proud of his ignorant prejudice.

Worse yet, he invents words like "kemeters" to refer to the Egyptians in order to disassociate himself with those nasty Semitic and European people. Has he no shame?

Race simply has nothing to do with the study of Ancient Egypt. The concept of races and people being "black" or "white" simply did not exist in ancient Egypt. I'm sure the author is as clueless to that fact as he is of anything else regarding the ancient world.

Purple Men?

The author is also ignorant of the rules of the Egyptian language and its grammar. To translate "kmt" as "country of the Black men" is grammatically and logically impossible. It is similar to my saying, "this is a purple shoe," and you hearing "this is a shoe belonging to purple men." They simply are not the same, and anyone who has actually studied and learned the language knows that.

By the way, the Egyptians would have used a word like "rmtt" - a feminine plural with a male and female determinative - to refer to people in general, so his fantasy of "black men" is doubly offensive.

Of course, the basis for the author's lack of comprehension becomes obvious when he says he used dictionaries to develop his theories of kinship, admitting, "I am fully aware of the inadequacy of material culled from dictionaries, yet in this case this method is inevitable." Huh? Hey, Allen, then maybe you should write about something you know.

Red Men?

Other than his lack of grammatical comprehension, the author also shows no knowledge of Egyptian literature, which clearly distinguishes and contrasts kmt (the habitable area of Egypt where the soil was yearly "blackened" with the nutrient-enriched flood waters) and dshrt (the red land of the desert and hills) - which, by his own "logic," he would have to translate as the "Country of the Red Men"!

But Allen glories in his racist ignorance: "Contrary to most studies of this kind, I have not attempted to camouflage my theoretical assumptions. Rather I have forthrightly stated both my theoretical and philosophical position."

His derision of serious and respected scholars (whose names I will not include here) is shameful. He reminds me of a bully on the school playground ridiculing the smart kids.

I'll let his own words warn you of his total lack of scholarly insight: His "research" consisted of "a general survey and review of the literature produced on the family, marriage, sexual like, women, and kinship of ancient Egypt." That is an exact quote.

I won't waste any more time on his various theories. You simply can't believe a word of this book, so what's the point.

I am shocked that a respected publishing company such as Routledge published this drivel.

Overpriced book, short on content

I agree with the previous reviewer: this is not a scholarly monograph, but the work of an amateur in the field of Egyptology. Few of the rich inscriptional and pictorial materials that survive have been sifted in this study. Its most interesting aspect is its Afrocentric approach, which is fairly well articulated here. It is therefore a shame that the author did not have better command of the classical Egyptian language, literature, and art.

A must for the .303 Enfield enthusiast

Most hunters and shooters will have heard about the ole three oh, and most of them will have one in the gun safe. Weather your into hunting or target shooting this book is a must as it goes a bit further than just improving accuracy . There are some performance tips that make it easier to live with too. The modifications, techniques and theories contained in this book give a good insight to modifying and improving rifles in general. If you are in to modifying your own rifles , especially the .303 Enfield this book is a really good read.
