Lady Be Good, by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

“[A] sexy and whimsical modern fairy tale.”

—Greensboro News & Record

“The always-funny Susan Elizabeth Phillips…has the heat turned up all the way for this one.”

—Detroit Free Press

The only four-time recipient of the Romance Writer’s of America’s prestigious Favorite Book of the Year Award, the incomparable Susan Elizabeth Phillips is one of America’s most beloved authors—and Lady Be Good is one of the perennial New York Times bestseller’s hottest, funniest, and most delightfully wild romance novels. The uproarious tale of a proper English headmistress hell-bent on destroying her reputation and a disgraced Texas athlete playboy determined to salvage his own, Lady Be Good is funny, sexy, and irrefutable proof of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune’s assertion that “Next to Tracy and Hepburn, no one does romantic comedy better than Susan Elizabeth Phillips.”

Amazon.com Review
Lady Emma Wells-Finch is determined to cause a scandal. Nothing big, you understand, just enough to convince her pompous British suitor that she's not an eligible candidate for marriage. She's thinking along the lines of, oh, maybe a discreet tattoo. But when suspended Texas golf pro Kenny Traveler meets her plane at Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport, Emma decides that he's the perfect candidate to destroy her reputation.

Kenny, on the other hand--who desperately wants to be reinstated on the golf tour--is just as determined to keep a low profile and remain squeaky-clean. If Lady Emma weren't a close personal friend of the golf commissioner's wife, he'd never have agreed to squire her around town. Unfortunately for Kenny, his weakness for the British beauty is growing daily, and it seems as though Emma may have feelings for him as well. In a bizarre turn of events, wild man Kenny finds himself trying to keep the prim and proper British lady from causing a scandal the size of which even the lone-star state has never seen, and the results will leave you laughing with delight.

Below the hilarious dialogue that is Susan Elizabeth Phillips's trademark, Kenny, Emma, and the charming array of characters that populate this exceptional contemporary are warm and wonderfully human. Emma saves her Kenny and he saves her right back--never were two people more gloriously deserving of each other. --Lois Faye Dyer

From Publishers Weekly
Flying from England to Texas, Lady Emma Wells-Finch meets world-famous pro golfer Kenny Traveler. She assumes that he's a gigolo and decides that he's just the man to relieve her of her virginity in order to get the stuffy, oafish Duke of Beddington out of her hair. Kenny's need to avoid scandal to save his career conflicts with Emma's need to invent scandal to free her from her English admirer. The results are hilarious. In a secondary plot line that mirrors Lady Emma's predicament with the duke, Kenny's seemingly flighty sister, Torrie?as beautiful as Kenny is handsome?is being forced by her father to marry geek Dexter O'Conner. Dexter and Lady Emma have their work cut out for them, for Kenny and Torrie's respective childhoods have left them scarred and incapable of adult relationships. Some outstanding secondary characters join this foursome, including those from Phillips's earlier Fancy Pants. Her Texas settings and sportsmen as heroes continue to shine, and her playful homage to the peculiarities of wealthy Texas women and small towns is dead-on. Phillips's newest is well written, funny, sexy and altogether satisfying.

From Library Journal
Our heroine quickly realizes that the only way she can save her beloved school is by losing her reputation so scandalously that she will discourage the matrimonial intentions of the property's new owner, the repulsive, overbearing Duke of Beddington. So the starchy Lady Emma Wells-Finch, Headmistress of England's exclusive St. Gertrude's School for Girls, gathers up her courage?and her umbrella?and heads for Texas to "do the deed," with passionate and hilarious results. A bad-boy golfer hero who can't afford another scandal and a stubborn, outspoken heroine determined to create one team up in this lively, well-written story. Phillips combines an unexpected premise with warm, appealing characters and overlays it all with her zingy trademark humor and well-developed sense of the ridiculous. Phillips usually publishes only one romance a year, and readers will be waiting for this one. Fans may be interested to note that this story reintroduces several characters from Phillips's earlier book, Fancy Pants (Pocket, 1991). Phillips (Dream a Little Dream, Avon, 1998) is an award-winning, best-selling writer and lives in the Chicago area.

Funny, sweet, believable!
By Meghan S
Loved this book, but then again I ALWAYS LOVE Susan Elizabeth Phillips. She makes characters believable with just enough flaws to make them human but not so flawed that you dislike them. Her dialogue is humorous and witty and I love that the heroine is a strong woman that saves the man and not the other way around.

Very enjoyable
By Amazon Customer
I really enjoyed this read. The only reason it didn't receive the five star was because I wanted to strangle the hero one too many times. You love him, but through out most of the book I wanted Emma to punch him in his stubborn handsome face.

Not her best, but still pretty dang good.
By mirope
Susan Elizabeth Phillips is known for her combination of humor and romance, and this book doesn't disappoint. I laughed so hard that I cried during the first 100 pages. This is the story of Lady Emma Wells-Finch, the very proper headmistress of a girl's school in England. She is visiting Texas to do some research on a book, and decides that this is the perfect opportunity to ruin her spotless reputation (something that is necessary to save the school for reasons that are rather implausible). Her friend Francesa Beaudine has persuaded Kenny Travers, a star golf pro currently banned from the PGA tour, to act as her chauffer and guide. Kenny is drop dead gorgeous (think Pierce Bronson) and has a quirky sense of humor. He plays on the fact that Emma has no idea who is and actually persuades her that his escort services are comprehensive - for a fee. Emma seizes the opportunity to play the bad girl and hires him for the night. Up until this point, the book is absolutely hilarious. While it remains funny (Kenny's sister is particularly amusing), it then takes a more serious turn as Emma travels to Kenny's home and helps him struggle with the ghosts from his past. This is where I had a little trouble with the narrative. Kenny is supposedly a decent, hardworking man who encourages everyone that he is an obnoxious oaf. Huh? Believe it or not, Phillips almost makes it work. In any event it provides the background for a very sweet romance between Kenny and Emma. This isn't SEP's best, but it's still a very enjoyable read. P.S. It'll be interesting to see what she comes up with for Teddy Beaudine.

The Sinking of INS Khukri: Survivor's Stories, by Major General Ian Cardozo

9 December 1971. 8.45 p.m. Torpedoed by a Pakistani submarine, the INS Khukri sank within minutes. Along with the ship, 178 sailors and 18 officers made the supreme sacrifice. Last seen calmly puffing on his cigarette, Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla, captain of the Khukri, chose to go down with his ship. This defining moment of the 1971 war between India and Pakistan is the basis of Major General Ian Cardozo's attempt to understand what happened that day and why. Major General Cardozo brings fresh insight into the hellish ordeal by including the heartfelt accounts of the survivors and of the members of their families. These accounts transform the stereotypical understanding of the incident; they also supplement it. We glimpse fear, trauma and death at first hand. In the annals of war writing, General Cardozo humanizes this cataclysmic event as never before.

Average writing...Poorly written account....
By Prabal
The subject matter is of vast importance to all Indians. INS KHUKRI is the first ship after India's Independence to go down with her Captain. But it is not a particularly well-written book. The author has not been able to recreate India of early 70s, giving so few cultural reference points that it sounds hollow and overtly technical like a training manual. I think it has been written dispassionately but nevertheless it is still a must read. After giving background of the reasons of the war, timetable of the attacks, some technical mambo-jumbo about sonar technology, it moves on to Survivors' account, which is a vast improvement from the initial chapters.

Surprised to find Indonesia so anxious to help Pakistan by planning to engage Indian navy in the Andaman sea. Idiots, I must say, both Pakistan and Indonesia!!!

Reliable, readable Rough Guides Conde Nast Traveller

About the Author
Marc Di Duca has lived in the former Czechoslovakia for ten years. Initially going there to tutor Czechs in English, he became fascinated with all aspects of the country. He has recently been working for the Czech Tourist Authority in London but intends to return to Bohemia to study Czech language and literature in Prague's University.

Not a prettily designed book, but enormously useful
By twigs
An excellent book by a knowledgeable writer that was enormously useful to us in planning a first-time trip to Prague and then in getting further afield and in working our way through many venues over the course of a week. The Rough Guide seems to have more depth of information thoughtfully presented than other books I purchased, which were more slick in their design. I almost left it behind in favor of the walking-tour and snazzy books that promised more fun in reading and using, but this became my go-to guidebook. Good maps (but I'd supplement them with the local street maps that are easier to read and use). I appreciated the Czech names for the various venues, etc., since that was what we most often encountered. The history section is important reading in understanding what you are seeing as you travel around. For me, the extremely overcrowded tourist areas were at first unpleasant, but this book helped me to see past all the milling around people. Four-and-a-half stars only because the typeface was so light that it was sometimes hard to read; I did bring a small flashlight/magnifier and used it. I do recommend this book. If we return we'll take it with us.

Praying for Money, by Russell H. Conwell

IN all the forty years of praying, of which only a partial record could be kept, there was no topic more satisfactory than the experience of such a large company in praying for money. There was no prearranged plan of procedure and no speculative purpose to obtain the help of God in the accumulation of property. But for some reason, which is not now recalled, there was given out for an evening's meditation the topic, "Shall we pray for money?" There was a strong division of opinion, some asserting that we are not authorized to pray for anything but for the Holy Spirit. Others asserted with complete confidence that prayer should be made for anything which we felt we needed. The majority appeared to be assured that men must work and seek only "the kingdom of God," and that they should believe that all other things would be given from God as we should have need. Fortunately or providentially the men and women who held to the theory that God commands his disciples to pray for money determined to put the matter to a fair test. They were led by a consecrated deacon, at whose house they held the weekly meetings. They did not ask the Lord for money at first, but prayed daily for instruction on the important question whether it was a duty, or was permissible, for men to pray for success in their secular business. There were four men and several business women whose experience was especially valuable. One of them was the owner or partner in a bookbindery. The company of believers devoted an entire evening to prayer for the prosperity of his business. They agreed, further, to pray for that one thing in unison at twelve o'clock each day for one week. The conditions were especially for observation, as the owner of the business was a devout, unselfish Christian who had determined, years before, to give a tenth of all his income to the Lord's work, and he stood willing to give his all if any good cause demanded such a sacrifice.

"Ryken's Worldly Saints offers a fine introduction to seventeenth-century Puritanism in its English and American contexts. The work is rich in quotations from Puritan worthies and is ideally suited to general readers who have not delved widely into Puritan literature. It will also be a source of information and inspiration to those who seek a clearer understanding of the Puritan roots of American Christianity." -Harry Stout, Yale University "…the typical Puritans were not wild men, fierce and freaky, religious fanatics and social extremists, but sober, conscientious, and cultured citizens, persons of principle, determined and disciplined excelling in the domestic virtues, and with no obvious shortcomings save a tendency to run to words when saying anything important, whether to God or to a man. At last the record has been put straight." -J.I. Packer, Regent College "Worldly Saints provides a revealing treasury of primary and secondary evidence for understanding the Puritans, who they were, what they believed, and how they acted. This is a book of value and interest for scholars and students, clergy and laity alike." -Roland Mushat Frye, University of Pennsylvania "A very persuasive...most interesting book...stuffed with quotations from Puritan sources, almost to the point of making it a mini-anthology." -Publishers Weekly "With Worldly Saints, Christians of all persuasions have a tool that provides ready access to the vast treasures of Puritan thought." -Christianity Today "Ryken writes with a vigor and enthusiasm that makes delightful reading-never a dull moment." -Fides et Historia "Worldly Saints provides a valuable picture of Puritan life and values. Honest and Forthright History
By A Customer
I was most pleased to find this book. Though I am a believer in the Puritans being the pinnacle of christianity I knew that they couldn't be perfect. Mr. Ryken has written a most readable and enjoyable history of the Puritans. He does not shy away from clear problems that they had.
What caught my interest most was his demonstration through his scholarship that society under the Puritan "Ideal" had problems, but was infinitely better off than most other areas in western Europe. John Calvin and his followers in Switzerland were clearly extreme in their use of scriptural discipline. The American Puritans were fanatics of control and discipline. The English Puritans were more well rounded in how they were to effect their society.
With all that said, Mr. Ryken has shown that the Puritans were not only good people, but may have been the true moral fiber of their different cultures. There seems to be an underlying truth that where the Puritans had the most influence, the people were the most safe and taken care of by the clergy.
Were there mistakes in the Puritan movement? Yes, and again I say YES. A mistakeless society or movement is the figment of a deranged imagination or science fiction. The Puritans were human. They did wrong. When they were shown the wrong, from a biblical perspective, they repented and made the change.
Modern revisionist historians have made much of the Puritan intolerence's for many things. If these historians would just read Mr. Ryken's book they would see, if they are honest, that the Puritans were very honorable and did stick to what they truly believed to be true.
I liked this book because it made me admire the Puritans afresh. I now believe that when someone insults me by alluding to my "Puritan" ethics that I am being complemented much more than I deserve. I would hope to live up to such a statement.

A Good Introduction to the Puritans
By Amazon Customer
This book gives the reader an excellent introduction to ideals of the Puritan movement. It is packed full of quotations since the point of the book is to let the Puritans speak for themselves on selected topics.
This book is an introduction to Puritan thought as a whole, so it does not touch on specific situations. It is very broad and deals with both English and American Puritanism. Though this book is excellent, it should be known by all of you potential buyers that it deals with historical Puritan thought and not with the hard history of facts and events.
Another bonus of this book is that it presents the Puritans in clear light. Dr. Ryken celebrates the Puritan culture but at the same time recognizes that they had clear faults. He includes a whole chapter on things we can learn from the negative examples within Puritanism.

Great book for people who are already familiar with the Puritans...
By Lyndon Unger
Leland Ryken's work, Worldly Saints; The Puritans As They Really Were, was definitely an eye opening experience. It seems that in being Canadian, and less familiar with the Puritans, I have been deceived by many common stereotypes that Ryken addresses in the book. I confess that I've gained as many beliefs about the Puritans from The Simpsons as I've gained from real history (and John Piper; the one pastor I've encountered who says the word "Puritan" in a positive sense). I've often thought of the Puritans as prudish, ornery, stupid old farmers who came to the 13 colonies wanting to escape England for the establishment of their own country where they could make 'fun' illegal. Dispelling many of my myths, Ryken brings out an admirable work of scholarship portraying the Puritans with a balanced and favorable treatment, drawing from a plethora of Puritan writers to establish his case and showing the Puritans as the life loving, God-fearing people that they were.

The book is laid out in quite a straightforward manner, with 12 chapters giving quite a comprehensive overview of Puritanism. Ryken starts with a brief overview of some of the `true' and `false' statements about the Puritans and a quick glance at their historical context. In the next four chapters he analyzes their `home life', tackling their attitudes and beliefs towards work, sex, money and family, with dozens of insightful comments and clarifications on many myths, especially regarding marriage and sex (one of the areas where I admittedly had severely misunderstood the views of the Puritans). The following three chapters deals more with specific `church life', with chapters on preaching, church/worship and their views regarding the Bible. Here Ryken lays out some comments regarding their powerful sermons that drew people from surrounding churches, and their laudable high regard for the scriptures that permeated every facet of their church worship. The next two chapters take a look at the Puritans attitudes and contributions in the fields of education and social action, with some dispelling of the `stupid farmers' myth, and the final two chapters analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the Puritans.

One must admit that Ryken's work is in fact a scholarly work with several strengths and few weaknesses. One of the most notable strengths is his attempt to show, from the Puritans' own hand, the Puritan positions on various theological and social issues. There is no easier way to dispel a myth than to provide proof from the party in question that they neither believed nor practiced anything resembling the accusation at hand.

Another strength of Ryken's work is his obvious effort to give the Puritans a fair hearing for their beliefs, as set against their cultural and socio-economic context. An evidence of an effort to give the Puritans a fair hearing is the many bibliographic resources provided in the book, many of which are at the end of each chapter. Another example of this is the careful explanation of the Puritan views regarding marriage and sex. Unless one would understand how their culture elevated virginity and held marriage in low esteem, one would be tempted to judge the Puritans in the light of 21st century marital and sexual models. Only with observing the Puritans views in their historical and socio-economic context can one see the actual surprising challenges they set against the established norm of their day. In a day where Puritans are caricatured and misunderstood, once one sees the Puritans in their historic context it becomes increasingly clear that an ignorance of the historic context from which they emerged is likely to be the principal contributor to caricatures and misunderstanding.

Though Worldly Saints offers a fair and balanced treatment of the Puritans, there are some weaknesses with the book. Though the book offers a few pages of history, it could be strongly argued that Ryken's work is meant for a person who is already substantially familiar with the Puritans. Ryken delivers quotes with no explanation as to who the referenced person is or why a quotation from them should bear any weight whatsoever. For an uninformed reader, Ryken could very well be quoting obscure and a-typical Puritans that did not represent the mainstream of Puritan thought. The actual text of the book is around 200 pages (minus endnotes, bibliography, index and the many blank pages, and it would have been nice for Ryken to have added 25-50 pages of history so that the less informed reader could pick up the work and have some historic frames of reference regarding people and places. I would have liked to see an initial chapter on the historic roots of Puritanism, specifically (and in light detail) lining out the main people and a timeline of the movement, not just 2 pages. Due to this reason, I simply would not recommend the book to someone as an introduction to Puritanism, though it is definitely a worthy read for a person who has a little more familiarity with the Puritans.

As for the actual contribution of the book to myself, I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed learning what was taught in the chapters on "work", "money" and "education". At my current church there's no shortage of preaching, teaching on the supremacy of scripture and instruction on the God honoring family. I must admit that I find very little teaching on "work", even though it is something that everyone does. It was encouraging to see the Puritan removal of the sacred/secular dichotomy and also the strong emphasis on the purpose of work and money. In the modern materialistic culture of North America, people seem to see the purpose of work as attaining money and the purpose of money as simply being attained for the acquisition of goods. The Puritan challenges to my materialism, as well as my weak Protestant work ethic, are both enlightening and welcome. I also found it interesting how the Puritans started so many schools, showing that they valued both learning and education. One often equates Puritans with the Salem Witch Trials, along with pictures of unwashed lynch mobs and rampant superstition. Ryken helped remind me that this was most certainly not the case, though there always have been ignorant and frightened people all throughout history.

All in all, Worldly Saints was a great book, with plenty of great lessons to learn from the Puritans within its pages. Ryken dispels many of my myths regarding Puritans, writing a work that portrays the Puritans with a balanced and favorable treatment. He eliminates many of the common caricatures from The Simpsons that pervade modern ideas about the Puritans and establishes that the Puritans were life loving, God-fearing people.
