Making History Come Alive
By C. Noonan
Peaceable Kingdom is an informative historical fictional account of the history of the Quakers in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. This book shows the Quaker belief and mindset of loving one's fellow man and looking for God within each person. It gives us perspective about persecution that people were willing to suffer for their convictions. Studying history through the eyes of fictional characters makes learning more enjoyable.

Take it from someone who shouldn't like this book, you will like this book.
By P. D. HENDERSON
My grandmother was a Quaker and I've always been mildly interested in Quakerism as a result. I'm not much of a history reader though so I've never really looked into it. Normally I read nearly exclusively science fiction and fantasy novels and historical fiction is completely foreign to me, and usually I find it dull or unappealing. In fact, to illustrate how much so, years ago my grandfather (husband to previously mentioned Quaker, but an Episcopalian) wrote a novel set during the American Revolution and although I've tried several times, I haven't yet finished it. This book -- about the same length -- was loaned to me by a friend and I finished it easily and fairly quickly.

That in itself should be a testimony to how well written this book is. And it wasn't the "action" keeping me glued to the page. There is some action, but really not much at all compared to what I normally read. The simple honesty of the characters makes them and their plights interesting and continuously engaging.

The book is actually two books sold together. It could easily have been split in half and neither part would suffer for it. I suspect most modern authors would have done exactly that. But it's good to have both together because between then they give a much fuller account of the history and spread of Quakerism than either part could do separately.

Part one takes place in England, and centers mostly around a married woman who meets George Fox and comes to know him and follow his beliefs. The story follows them both and several other characters as the events unfold that eventually lead to his martyrdom and their eventual exile. I have little knowledge of Quaker history other than through this book, so I can't attest to the accuracy. But nothing in it felt in any way out of place or fabricated.

The second part of the book continues the story an unspecified number of years later, in America, where a community of Quakers (none of the same characters) is undergoing turmoil mostly on account of the issue of slavery. There is also an additional plot concerning relations with the surrounding natives. This part of the book is somewhat (in my opinion) less dramatic and the characters less inspiring. But the relevance of the issues they are struggling with makes the text compelling enough to make up for that.

Honestly, as a reader who doesn't normally read historical fiction, I would still put this book as one of the top twenty most inspiring books I've ever read. I'm exceedingly low on funds right now (unemployed and in massive debt), but I do intend to buy my own copy to read it again as soon as possible.

This book changed my life
By Joan S.
Any seeker will love this book. It is a great, fictional story of the Quakers in Britain and their move to Philadelphia and the New World. When I got less than half way through it I felt that if there was any truth in it I had to find it. I did and have been a Quaker for about 40 years. It is a grew story in itself and anyone seeking will find it enlightening. The author was a Quaker so it mirrors the truth closely.
