Wonderful epic fantasy with some surprising plot twists

I have to admit, after reading the first novel in this series, The Last Whisper of the Gods, I thought I knew where everything was going. I was wrong. The Curse in the Gift takes a few of the characters in expected directions but there are some real surprises. As much as I liked The Last Whisper of the Gods, this is a better read. It’s faster paced with more action and the story is more complex. The characters develop nicely. Magic is more evident. The cliffhangers from the first book are all tied up. A new villain is introduced. The stakes become higher. If there’s a nit-pick, it’s that Berardinelli’s prose is sometimes wordy and there are a few awkward sentences. Still, compared to a lot of books I read these days (many of which come out of major publishing houses), this is as good or better. Berardinelli’s style isn’t up there with Martin or Rowling or Donaldson but he’s better than Brooks and dozens of others.

The Curse in the Gift is obviously designed to lead directly into the third book but there’s a sense of closure in the way this one ends. It doesn’t cut off at an inappropriate point. The first book is a good read but, the deeper I got into this one, the more apparent it became that The Last Whisper of the Gods was setup. This is where the meat can be found and it’s a great meal. Can’t wait to see how it all ends.

Running out of body parts.

This is actually a pretty good book. The story is good as are most of the interactions but it does have some flaws. The biggest two IMHO are the near omnipotent and omniscient antagonist (not in absolute power) but in that the worlds magic rules don't apply to him. This is problematic because the physical "cost" of using magic, the physical destruction of the casters body is the only limiting factor. While everyone else pays the cost the antagonist seems immune. The second is the need to torture the antagonist of ridiculous levels. At this point he's lost a hand, arm and leg, while the antagonist is in perfect condition. Of course this is the normal story arc but it felt done to extreme in this book. It made me want fast forward and skip to when the antagonist torture ends and the evenly matched contest begins

This is a reissue of The Encyclopaedia of Colour for Watercolour Artists that first appeared in 2007. You have to hunt around a bit for that information, but we won't dock any points as they've been honest. Although it has UK origins, there's an American feel, the author is American and you can't help suspect it was originally conceived for that market. There's nothing wrong in that, but you might want to be aware that some of the colours are quite bright and the portraits, landscapes and buildings have a transatlantic air. All that said, it went down well on its original appearance and the book has a pleasantly straightforward approach to a slightly nebulous subject that the author manages to pin down rather successfully. The basic premise is to help you choose what colours are best for your style of painting from the hundreds (even thousands) available, selecting from single-pigments to pre-mixed hues as well as those which granulate, those which are most transparent and a selection of the opaques. All this is done by means of simple spreads with example paintings which are explained and deconstructed with an analysis of the colours that were used. The progression is subject-based, so this isn't one of those books that straitjackets you into choosing your colours before you start to paint, surely one of the most pointless exercises there is. The almost complete lack of step-by-step demonstrations will please many readers and the book has a pleasant feel of serendipity about it as you flick through the pages. It's something to have around you and dip into for ideas rather than something to read through as an instruction manual, and all the better for that.-Artbookreview.net When I started reading this I thought I could remember it from earlier - it was previously published as The Encyclopaedia of Colour for Watercolour Artists. The properties of colours over long periods are important and Jan explains how paints made from inorganic or organic can affect this. I found the explanation of how to read the information on paint labels really helpful. If you are concerned about longevity of colours and works this is information that is indispensable. The colour wheel she shows is excellent showing where various named colours fit in the colour spectrum, useful when you wonder what sort of yellow is isoindolinone yellow... The book covers which colours are transparent non-staining or staining, sedimentary and opaque paints, granulating paints and how to use these to exploit the special effects they have. The latter half of the book covers different subjects and how to choose not just the correct colours to enhance your subject but how to select the type of colour and which techniques to use to show them at the best effect. I found the section covering New Developments really interesting as it covers metallic paints, something I personally find very exciting and was really interested in reading about how these paints were developed. This incredible book is really interesting for anyone who wants to know more then just the basics, have such a range of information you'll want to dip back in to it again and again. About the Author

Wonderful and inspiring

It's split into three parts. Section 1 is on understanding pigment properties. Section 2 touches on the colour palettes and schemes. The last section looks at how you can use colours on different subject matters that range from landscapes to portrait drawings.

The text is informative and written in a way that's easy to understand. The pages are nicely laid out with beautiful examples from the author Jan Hart as well as other watercolour artists. You can get to check out different styles and the versatility of watercolour.

I like that the examples show the many possibilities of using colours, especially on putting colours on subjects that you don't normally associate them with. There are a couple of cool demonstrations on how different colour schemes can produce different moods even with the same subject.

There are many tutorials and little exercises scattered around, with lots of tips, ideas and techniques on the different ways you can experiment on your own.

This is an interesting and inspirational book. Even if you're not into watercolour, you might have second thoughts after reading this.

Excellent watercolor resource!

I love this book! Jan provides an clear, logical way to think about color and provides a good foundation for watercolor artists. Jan has a science mind and artist heart, it is a beautiful combination. I was fortunate to take a class from her and this book is a reflection of her teaching style. It is out of print and I was hesitant to add one more book to "my collection of watercolor books", but I'm glad I spent the money.

A '4' corners tool kit

Jan: does her painting in the four corners area. This book covers a lot of possibility, that can be put to use in that wonderful part of the country. She may be addicted to Dan Smith brand paint, but that only helps explain her wonderful use of an outstanding palliate of available watercolor pigments. She is a master of color mixing/application/value selection etc. And she can get her thoughts across to most any intermediate/experienced watercolor painter.

A fun book to spend a few days in the studio (or kitchen table) just trying out her methods. Just copy the art out of the book. I can see that this will be in my permanent collection .

I've taught thermo dozens of times out of four textbooks. Koretsky is the book that the students have appreciated the most and with enthusiasm. I'm very excited about the much clearer grasp of the concepts the students have obtained with this book this semester. The writing is very informative and clear, the choice of topics is perfect and the examples are wonderful. Futhermore, the sophistication of the topics is also at a high level, but is approachable for the students, as the concepts are explained so well. Thanks for making thermodynamics so accessible for students!

First edition, but oh well

This text is good for exactly what it claims: the undergraduate. If you're looking for a good general text on thermodynamics that you can use throughout your career (even as a graduate student), this is NOT it. But if you're looking for an easy-to-approach and helpful book that spoon-feeds you the (admitedly difficult the first time) concepts of thermodynamics, this is the text for you. Koretsky himself is upfront about this in the preface. There are a lot of funny errors in this printing (look in the front cover to see that the units for gravitational acceleration are m^2/s and that a m^3 is only 10^-3 L. That would be a LOT of Coke). But hey, even BS&L (the hailed transport phenomena text of chemical engineering) is full of them (if you don't believe me, check out the correngia on Bird's website at U of W). The charts in the back are somewhat complicated to use, at least a lot more than my favorite textbook of all time, Felder and Rosseau's Introduction to Chemical Engineering. In conclusion, good for the confused and undergraduate, of little value to the graduate and practicing.

Great Text. A Realistic Read.

I received my B.S. in chemical engineering (2005) at OSU and studied this text, in part, under Dr. Koretsky. The text was split into two undergraduate courses. I recently entered a PhD program at Texas A&M and reviewed almost the entire text in preparation for the qualifier. The text information was more than sufficient to pass the thermodynamics portion of the test at Texas A&M.

In reviewing some of the other comments, I noticed that there is an indication that the primary problem is a lack of detail. I believe this text has more than enough detail for 99.9% of thermodynamics students. If you know the material in this text, you will have the required thermodynamics background for most graduate courses in chemical engineering. Additionally, you will be ahead of most other graduate students.

I believe the text is excellent because it is clear and practical. It covers, what appears to me, to be the important topics in a clear way. It can be realistically reviewed in its entirety in two undergraduate courses, plus maybe a couple of self study weeks afterward. I reviewed nearly the entire book in about 1 month during the summer before starting graduate school.

Great book!

This is a very nice book for undergraduate thernodynamics. I decided to use it for teaching this class for sophomores. The material es very well presented and developed, with lots of examples. The set of problems at the end of each chapter is also interesting. Definitely a good purchase.

Beautifully written...

The prologue reminds us of the events of 1918, there was war, poverty, and the Spanish Influenza. The setting is rural Indiana. Jenny Clark is a widow with four young children to raise and another on the way. Her husband had been a tenant farmer for Elmer Vance, with Owen’s death came the uncertainty of where they would live. Elmer needed a new farm hand and he would need the farm house. Jenny wrote to her sister but little help was coming from there. Adine and Harold were willing to take the boys but not the girls. Life for women in that era wasn’t easy. They were meant to raise children. But how without a husband?

I have tried to be careful not to give away too much of this tale in writing this review. There is so much more I want to say concerning the plot. The characters were very well developed. I liked Elmer, Jenny and even Edith. I found Adine and Harold to be self-centered and repulsive. A woman had little to no chance in this world without a man. We also tend to forget that women of that era had physical needs and feelings. The Prairie Farmer is a small book with a mere 94 pages but each page is filled with much emotion. I feel a warmth in my heart for The Prairie Farmer. My only criticism is the prologue. The history of the period can be a little dry and drag a little. I realize it is an important part of the book for it explains Owen’s death but I would have like to have seen a different approach. Having said that I highly recommend The Prairie Farmer written by author, Ann Alexander. This short tale will make a great book study or just read it for entertainment but please read it.

Married To The Game was a great readers choice for anyone who loves a real true story told in factual events. It gives you something to look back on to evaluate the essence how one person's struggle to keep their voice alive benefited so many others who have come and gone before us. Lydia Harris' account of what really occured in Compton was the evolution of a real story untold in the early 90's area of music. Most women luck up on prince charming and in this case Lydia Met Michael "Harry O" Harris, who was a classic man, who ran and owned several business' at very young age in his career. Lydia had no idea that one day in her near future, her life would be full of court room hearings, lawyers luncheons, and consistent sharks who wanted to take advantage of Michael Harris' empire. Soon Lydia and Michael would build their own joining ventures together and become one force under Godfather Entertainment.

It is a fact that a convicted felon cannot sit as an active CEO, therfore Lydia's role took full force in developing and planning the emerge of the label that would come to be called, Death Row Records. In some accounts upcoming artist at the time claim that Death Row came about from the guys chillin with "Suge" on what is considered "Tha Row" talking about what the name of the label should be. They came up with "Deaf Row" like "Def Jam" records which at the time was a popluar label in high demand with household name artist. In Lydia's, account she describes the title of the label as a common agreement between Lydia, Michael, Suge, and David. Ironically, in the four years of Death Rows Chart Ripping records, Death Row reigned in the music indudtry while also introducing to new concepts to the Game of music and entertainment. One concept was the introduction of Label Logo jewlery specifally gold chained necklace and double cds in what was reffered to the hip hop music. Both ideas were first introduced by the infamous Death Row Records.

So in my opinion Lydia Harris, not only fought for herself, she fought her daughter, Michael, Suge, Snoop, Dre. Dre, Tupac Shakur, Lady of Rage just to name a few... This is a leagacy worth honoring and paying homage too. In 2015, or in the near future. If Lydia were to do it all over again, return to the game that she "married" over 2 decades ago, who would be the next Artist to make a name for themselves with her knowledge and expertise in finding the next multi-platinum recording artist sale chart HIT. There is no telling where the music industry could turn for the future but we do know that it is a very high possibility that the music will touch many lives again! hip hop, gospel, jazz, country, alternative,pop, reggae, R&B. With the creation of new sound all across the world. We need a woman like Lydia Harris to show the world Who really knows how to execute with talented artist in the music industry having power and integrity and most of all your word. my food for thought!
