About the Author
On April 19, 2005, CARDINAL JOSEPH RATZINGER was elected POPE BENEDICT XVI and became the 264th successor to Peter as the "Vicar of Jesus Christ." He may well be the most accomplished theologian to be elected Pope in modern times. Beginning in 1981 he spent over 20 years as the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, a role often depicted as the "defender of the faith." Cardinal Ratzinger was also President of the Pontifical Biblical Commission and of the Preparatory Commission that codified the new "Catechism of the Catholic Church," published in 1994.

A significant look into the thoughts of Benedict XVI

As someone who has read a number of works by Joseph Ratzinger, I must admit that this one is uniquely significant. Media sound bytes and commentaries from those who are displeased with Pope Benedict XVI often unfairly characterize him as someone who is opposed to the Second Vatican Council. Such critics seem to imply that Pope Benedict would like to remold the Church into it's Pre-Conciliar form. In this book, however, we see a valuable glimpse into the thought of Fr. Joseph Ratzinger, as a theological expert who attended and contributed to the Second Vatican Council. We see his frank analysis of the problems facing the Church prior to Vatican II and the excitement of the bishops of the world who assumed their role as pastors to improve the life of the Church. Ratzinger broadly chronicles and comments on the events of each session of the Ecumenical Council, offering his own insight into the significance of each development. Someone who has accepted the charicatures of Ratzinger that are so common would be surprised at his own unambiguous support of the Council reforms.

It would be a mistake, however, to conclude that Ratzinger's theological opinions have changed dramatically since these early reflections. Already in the text of these theological highlights, we see his caution about potential misunderstandings regarding Council buzzwords like "Pastoral," "Ecumenical," etc. In this earlier work, these prophetic cautions are overshadowed by his excitement at the renewal awaiting the Church at the time of the Council; in his later works, like Ratzinger Report, we see the same theologian's reflection on the fact that some of the potential misunderstandings of the work of the Council had in fact become the dominant understanding in many circles. While there is perfect continuity in his thought, the situation of the Church had changed dramatically.

In summary, this is a very significant work for anyone who wants an authentic glimpse into the thought of Pope Benedict XVI.

Very worthwhile

The historical perspective is very enlightening, in particular as regards the situation prior to Vatican II, which warranted Pope John XXIII's call to the bishops, and Pope Paul VI's continuation of that mission. The enormous scope of the project is revelatory. So often, in perplexity about developments since Vatican II, the times before the council can seem either halcyonic or anachronistic, perhaps especially for those who hadn't yet been born.

Ratzinger, writing as a young, already brilliant scholar, lays the cards, the reasons, on the table clearly and fairly, as one who was there. His writing even then was extraordinary. The perspective this brings to later, sometimes troubling developments in our Church is valuable. If you have current concern for, and hope in, the Catholic Church in our day, this text is worth the price and your time.

It's Kennedy-bashing time again, as rich-and-venal chronicler Dunne (An Inconvenient Woman, etc.) drags writer-hero Harrison Burns through 20 years of guilt for having helped our most prominent Irish Catholic family cover up a sex murder by its fair-haired scion. After a brief peek ahead--naughty talk, dirty pictures, and several murders are all mentioned in the first four pages--it's 1972, and Harrison is mysteriously infatuated with prep-school chum Constant Bradley, a plausible cipher who can get aroused only when he's beating up his dates. When Constant's unwanted attentions to Winifred Utley leave her dead on the family estate, Harrison reluctantly helps cover up his guilt, allowing himself to be bought off (``My soul was lost, but my future was bought and paid for'') by Constant's wealthy, ruthless father Gerald (no slouch at covering up his own sex crimes) with the connivance of Constant's slimy, crippled brother Jerry. (Hovering piously on the fringes: Constant's impossibly devout mother Grace, his successful brothers Desmond and Sandro, and his sisters Maureen and Mary Pat, who never mention their retarded, institutionalized sister Agnes.) Then it's 1989, and Harrison, visiting a Maine nursing home to cover one of his true-crime expos‚s, runs into Constant's sister Kitt, visiting crazy Agnes, immediately starts a torrid affair with Kitt, and allows himself to be lured back into the Bradley orbit by the offer to ghostwrite a saccharine family bio to launch Constant's gubernatorial bid. When old man Bradley, trying to take uncooperative Harrison out of the picture for good, overreaches himself, Harrison decides to unload his secret and go after Constant. So in 1993, Harrison looks back over the long-delayed trial--and its inevitable outcome. Dunne may see himself as another F. Scott Fitzgerald, chronicling the moral corruption of the well-to-do (references to Gatsby passim). But the main pleasures here involve nothing more moving than watching a wily old pro set up characters with as much individuality as ninepins preparatory to bowling them down. I avoided this book for a long time, under the mistaken belief that it was just another potboiler, taking advantage of a tragedy to make a bestseller. Not so, I found upon reading it. In fact, the book is based only loosely on the Moxley murder and has a life all its own. The relationship the sometime narrator has with an obscenely wealthy, powerful, immoral family is far more interesting than the murder, which is at the center of the narrative. Dunne does not come across as a great novelist, if one judges him by his TV interviews. This book is not at all befuddled. Dunne knew exactly what he was doing with every word.

Carving Woodspirits using Pocket Knife in Salt Lake City

This is a better step-by-step than any found on YouTube. The instruction uses a large variety of tools and soft wood but worked for me using Gambel Oak and a tactical pocket knife. The book elevated my design by leaps and my technique only slightly. I highly recommend this book for intermediate whittlers.

Great tips and detail - but as it says BEYOND the BASICS

This is an outstanding book - but the title is very accurate "BEYOND the Basics".

There are a lot of great tips - but if you're a budding wood spirit hiking stick carver - then I'd suggest ignoring most of the geometry unless you're carving a large project. On my roughly 1" hiking stick projects I find the non-exaggerated geometry to be too fine for my abilities. I'd do OK on a far bigger stick - but I'm still working through "smallish" details on a project for my father's birthday.

I'd suggest "How to carve a Woodspirit in a Hiking Stick" by Skylar Johnson and in particular the more exxagerated geometry such as longer noses, etc, will give you more carving room and still come out great. And, hey, what wood spirit is normal? I'm probably fighting one in the stick for my father trying to carve it with a small nose when it's probably got a huge noggin!

Excellent book! Very helpful, answered a lot of my questions about "how to" & carving specific areas of the face! I've bought a lot of instructional books that gave me a helpful tip or 2 but I keep going back to this one! Very glad I bought it!

This book really captured me...

This is a compelling read. Once into it, I couldn't put it down. The author's excellent descriptive style and detailed journaling drew me into his world and made it a very present and personal experience. I witnessed through his eyes the physical and mental brutality of life on a heavily bombed military base. And as his world crumbled, I shared the emotional chaos which followed. It was all at once touching and frightening, angering and, in the end, inspiring. At times, it made me cry.
This book is an incisive and deeply moving chronicle of the effects of war on the human mind and spirit and a poignant portrayal of one man's fall into the dark abyss of PTSD and his journey back to life. I enthusiastically endorse it to anyone interested in war stories, to anyone touched in some way by trauma and PTSD, to anyone who believes in the transcendence of the human spirit.

A Brutally Honest Window into Abstract History

If you've ever wondered what it is really like to be the "boots on the ground", this is your answer! It's all here from start to finish, the oddessy that deployment involves- all captured in remarkable detail and shared in a compelling, cohesive story. This book fills in the blanks about what it is really like to be sent halfway around the world to support a massive movement of troops, and the honesty that it is written with reveals many astounding details of how little was actually accomplished-despite damaging so many lives.
The author does an amazing job of opening his mind and heart, inviting the reader to experience the terrifying roller coaster of emotions he endured, from the crippling tedium of the unending logistical and bureaucratic misery, to the deadening relentless terror of being constantly barraged by enemy fire and having no control whatsoever of whether you live or die. The only thing that I can imagine would be worse is to be forced to endure all of this for a cause that you completely morally disagreed with, out of a sense of duty to your country and your unit- exactly as the author did. This book is a snapshot of a point in time in history that most people will never think much about, yet it is exactly the kind of vivid narrative that if more people understood the reality of, it would result in a better future as more people could draw on when the abstract word "war" is proposed as a solution. This book is a window into another reality, and it reveals a dark truth and shines a light where darkness has been allowed to remain for far too long.

I worked on this book with Scott, and it was one of my most rewarding experiences as an editor. Scott brought real heart and earnestness to this book, a determination to both inform the reader of what life was like in Iraq and to find meaning in himself after an experience that nearly undid him. When most people think of war, they think of bloody firefights and brief moments of terror, heroism, and sacrifice. But for most, war is not like that at all. For Scott, it was repairing helicopters in a poorly secured forward operating base, enduring the accumulating low-grade terror of enemy mortars randomly lobbed into the base at random intervals, knowing that every day held the possibility of an instantaneous, unavoidable, and seemingly pointless maiming or death.

Lines in the Sand is a story of loss, loss of loved ones, loss of trust, and loss of identity, even purpose. But it's much more than that as well. It's the story of a man reclaiming himself through great personal effort. In his expansive honesty, Scott brings to the reader a harrowing case study of a man pushed to the brink by PSTD, and an inspiring memoir of how a man can learn to live with himself in a world where everything he had believed in had turned to dust.

About the Author
James M. Schell is a partner in the New York office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. He represents private investment funds, banks, insurance companies, investment banking firms and other financial institutions in a broad range of financing and investment transactions. Mr. Schell heads the interdisciplinary group at Skadden Arps, which focuses on private investment funds, including leveraged buyout, venture capital and hedge funds, as well as investment funds designed to invest in particular countries or regions such as China or Latin America.Mr. Schel's work also includes a substantial number of merchant banking and venture capital transactions in which financial institutions or private equity funds acquire significant equity stakes. These transactions involve a diverse mix of equity interests, ranging from convertible debt and preferred stock to warrants and common stock. Mr. Schell, who received his J.D. degree from Columbia University Law School, is a lecturer at the Institute of International Research and American College of Investment Counsel programs.

Kristine M. Koren is a member of Skadden's Investment Management Group.  Her practice focuses primarily on the formation and operation of U.S. and offshore private investment funds, including private equity funds, hedge funds, funds of funds, venture capital funds and hybrids.  In addition to assisting fund sponsors with their organizational structures, Ms. Koren also regularly advises on the sale of investment adviser businesses.  She represents both sponsors and investors, and provides ongoing regulatory, transactional and compliance advice.  Although her practice emphasizes asset management, Ms. Koren also handles a wide variety of general securities and corporate matters.   Ms. Koren is a member of the New York City and New York State bar associations, as well as the American and Puerto Rican bar associations.  She speaks fluent Spanish and French, as well as English.

Pamela Lawrence Endreny advises clients on a broad range of federal income tax matters, including mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, spin-offs and restructurings.  She focuses in particular on the formation and operation of private equity and hedge funds and their investments as well as transactions involving investment advisors (including public offerings thereof).  She has significant experience advising clients on international acquisitions, restructurings, joint ventures, divestitures and financings.  She regularly represents companies and financial institutions in connection with capital markets and derivatives transactions. She also represents clients in obtaining private letter rulings from the Internal Revenue Service and in tax controversies with the IRS.

The Best Book on Private Equity

I've been searching for such a book on private equity funds for many years. Most of the books I read on the subject are disappointingly superficial. So it was a great risk for me purchasing another book on private equity from Amazon without any cover picture, contents, reviews and with a rather solid price. However, I've taken the risk and purchased James M. Shell's "Private Equity Funds: Business Structure and Operations" recently, and I must say Mr.Shell's work is by far the most professional and in-depth book on fund structure and operations ever written.

I had purchased and read Joseph W.Bartlett's "Advanced Private Equity Term Sheets and Series A Documents: Business Structure and Operations (Corporate Securities Series.)" before (also from Law Journal Press series). I must say, I considered it being a good book, but only until I've found J.M.Shell's masterwork.

Mr.Shell has set a gold standard!

P.S. the book contains a CD if purchased directly from the publisher. I haven't received it when buying from Amazon.
