In German author/illustrator Fries's fable-like tale, three animals expect the worst when a pig moves into their apartment building. "Everyone knows that pigs are messy and dirty and sloppy," states Henrietta Hen. Seeing what they want to see, she and two neighbors eagerly report to one another on the transgressions of their new neighbor, whom they spy dropping pieces of firewood on the sidewalk, a bag of flour by the stairwell and what appears to be mud (but is actually clay) in the hall. What they don't see is Theodore the pig's subsequent diligence in cleaning up after himself. While they gossip, the ambitious pig busily builds a fire in his fireplace, bakes cookies and fashions clay game pieces in the likeness of each neighbor for a parlor game. When the neighbors call on Theodore to complain, they learn the embarrassing truth but become fast friends. Diverting details abound in Fries's cartoonish watercolors, which effectively reinforce this tale's warning about judging by appearances. Ages 4-7. (Sept.)

Kindergarten-Grade 2-A fox, hare, and hen are disturbed to learn that a pig is moving into their apartment building. Before having met their new neighbor, they all agree that "-pigs are messy and dirty and sloppy." Then, confirming their fears, each animal sees Theodore spill something on the floor or stairs, without noticing his efforts to clean up. Convinced that the pig is a pig, they go upstairs to confront him about his behavior, only to find that he is a friendly and creative individual. The watercolor cartoons are warm and appealing, with plenty of action on each page. The text often describes what the neighbors think of Theodore while the illustrations show his true personality, making the contrast easily understandable to children. Fries's use of animal characters lightens the serious message about prejudice. The book will work well as a read-aloud, especially in elementary classrooms where the story can be discussed.

The three friends aren't "a bit surprised" when Theodore Pig drops firewood on the sidewalk, spills flour in the hallway, and tracks mud (actually, clay) up the staircase. They assume others are cleaning up for him; however, children witness the pig cheerfully sweeping, mopping, and scrubbing. Soon enough, the trio of neighbors must face their mistaken assumptions. Theodore politely invites them to share the products of his labor: a cozy fire in the fireplace, freshly-baked cinnamon cookies, and a new game complete with little clay figures resembling the fox, hen, and hare. Fries' sunny watercolors in an oversize format reinforce Theodore Pig's sense of spick-and-span and accent the humor. Henrietta Hen, Doctor Fox, and Nick Hare are all concerned when they see Theodore Pig moving into their building, as "pigs" are known for being, well . . messy! They were hoping that their new neighbor would be as neat and tidy and themselves, but now it seems unlikely!
Unfortunately, each one of them happens to catch Theodore dropping something and making a mess, as he is moving in. Not knowing that it is Theodore who cleans up the mess after himself, they assume that it is one of them who cleans up after Theodore. They all decide to confront Theodore and let him know the rules of the building, as they cannot tolerate any more messes. Theodore apologizes for his "accidents" and explains to them that he hopes that he cleaned up everything thoroughly.
They are all taken back by this knowledge as they "assumed" that they all took turns in cleaning up the messes. Theodore invites them in for cookies and games, and they are fast on their way to becoming a tight knit group, with many evenings shared in front of the fire, enjoying games and eating cookies together!
A very cute book for the 4 to 7 year old. The author has done a great job in also colorfully illustrating this tale!

This book is not only entertaining and encourages good reading skills like prediction, but it presents a vital life lesson in an easy to understand venue. Awesome book and highly recommended.

This is a great book with a very profound message. I recommended this book to my other friends and they loved it as well. Great way to teach kids about friendship. This book is made for everyone and especially families. I also recommend "One" and "Zero" which are the other books in the series. I know what I'll be getting my niece and nephews for the holidays. Thanks again for another wonderful book!!!

Friendship can be wonderful AND heartbreaking

Very clever, multi-layered story addressing friendship and all of its ups and downs. How to handle a new friend? How to handle a best friend who wants other friends? Kathryn Otoshi wrote and illustrated a beautiful addition to her series of books that talk about character building attributes that all kids need. AS a children's librarian for 20 years, I highly recommend all three books; Zero, One and Two!

Can't Judge a Book by it's Cover

I must say I've been seeing the Rogue Hypnotist eBooks advertised on my kindle for a while. I confess I didn't like the cover artwork and I didn't like the title Rogue Hypnotist. Was I wrong. The Deprogramming Addiction caught my eye so I got it on kindle Unlimited for free. I listened to it on my kindle text to speech. Absolutely fantastic scripts and techniques to help with addiction. I highly recommend it to all hypnotists. What an education!

This might be the best book in the series

This book is set apart from the other ones in that it covers compulsions and addictions to a greater degree. This seems to be more advanced hypnotic work and i have not tried any of it yet, but the writing is solid and some of the advice is so down-to-earth that it sounds practical and workable. This might be the best book in the series, which is already very good if a little scattershot. Highly recommended.

This book is true to its title~ The authors truly seek the heart of wisdom by skillfully blending Buddhist teachings on insight meditation practice with conventional knowledge, without loosing authenticity. The book is extremely informative and instructive for beginners. For those who are attracted to this practice, but still are not convinced enough to actually sit and accept this practice ( looking for rationale), this book is very convincing through its highly eloquent, balanced, pragmatic, and wise voice... And if you are already practicing then this book further motivates you to work through various hindrances and stick to this practice. How I see it, anyone with an open and receptive heart will absorb the wisdom of the words here and be encouraged to develop and expand their own practice.

Helpful understanding of the hows and whys of meditation

I love the simple and direct understanding the authors impart as to how to begin Vipassana, the core elements and components. This seems like a training manual, for those of us who cannot attend a training seminar. I really appreciate the deepening of my understanding in just the first few pages. Mindfulness has made a huge difference in the way I see m own life and how i work with clients in psychotherapy. I highly recommend this bok, and anything by Jack Kornfield.
